Over thinking chokes...

Post by batsonbe »

20ga Remington 870 3” 21” Barrel. 1 5/8 8x9’s

My .555 was slightly blown (had large holes in the 10” & 20”) Rounding 300/150

My .562 was super even. I really like the pattern and its in my gun to hunt with. Rounding 250/200

I prefer more in the 10” than the 20” but evenly spread. Does anyone think that I could get a pattern in between these two if I had a custom choke made .558 or .560?

I just like to tinker around with things. I understand both of what I have will work but I’m looking for an optimal pattern. Honestly if the .555 shot evenly with no large holes I’d hunt with it.

I think you would be splitting hairs. I would hunt the .562 pattern as is, but try straight 9s in both when you run out. BTW, what brand are your choke tubes?

Splitting hairs. Just go hunt. Weather changes, barrel cleanliness between shots, etc could affect it as much as you're looking for

you know in the target world we go .002 on chokes. Then start to split that. I just never figured guys would take it to that point in hunting. Now that TSS has became the normal shell  folks have gone to killing paper so not telling what will come.

I would be ecstatic with a 250/200 load of 9x8's. I am sure you could get exactly the pattern you are looking for with more tinkering, and if you enjoy it go for it!
That said you will not notice a bit of difference in hunting/killing turkeys.

I bought a .558 IC to try because of their return policy. Hopefully it will be more even throughout the 10-20” than the .555 with those 8’s in the duplex I’m shooting.

Heres my report... I shot this morning at lasered 40ydrs. 303 in a 10" and 135 in the 20" with the .558 IC
Found it interesting that the more open choke shot tighter for me than the .555. When I counted up everything it was the exact same pellet count from the 10 - 20" as the .555 just more even, which is exactly what i was looking for.

I've hunted with a 260/200 paternity for the last couple years. That 562 is going to be wicked if you give it a chance.

135 in the 10-20 is pretty sparse. I would hunt with the .562

562 is what I run in my 870 Youth and it's right where I want it to be.

I personally wouldn't like the 558 pattern for me.

I havent tried the Rem SFLO. I like the pattern of the .558 but I also am considering getting a .560 just to try to see how it performs. The .558 rolled a big one, (for SC), down the side of a steep hill today. He weighed 22lbs 9.5" beard 15/16"- 13/16" Spurs. He was roughly 30 yards away. I was super excited to get this bird with the first shotgun i ever purchased as a young boy. Very thankful for this bird, Praise god

I am planning on getting some nitro straight 9 tss. Simply for improved pattern density. I don’t think 8s are needed. Major over kill for the range I will be shooting turkeys at.
