200 count .410

Post by reminex »

I'm looking at setting up a .410 that constantly puts up 180+ in the 10 at 40. Preferably with 9 but 9.5 im open to as well. Has anyone seen these type patterns? I've searched around with little luck.
My mind is considering longer barrels, custom work, brass hulls...

What do you guys think would be a path to reach this goal?

200 going to be a push. You may get with Tommy or Hal see if they have something in that bag of tricks. We have seen 140 to 160 all in what gun. You see a few that goes more with the brass. Mr. GLS has some of the best ones I have seen in person. I see a few guys that post 170 to 180. I know they run 385 to 388 chokes most the time.

Do people often shoot enough to show what a gun will do for certain? There have been 180+ patterns, but the extensive testing required to state base level performance is more than most anyone does for any gun.

The source for brass hulls has put the business up for sale. You might want to order some to ensure you can actually get them. This is not to say brass is for sure better for performance.

I saw dude on FB that ran a sumtoy in a mossberg and claimed first shot was a 278. I counted all pellets visible and counted 370 pellets. Most of the bottom of target cardboard was missing but id say there would be at least another 40 pellets for a total of 410 pellets in an apex shell. Of course Apex says it's shell contains only 366 to begin with so the numbers don't jive even at 370. The rest of his patterns were great at 170-180ish.

278 is a good number, but I honestly do not think that is at 40 yards. I've loaded and shot TSS 9s in my 870 .410, and got solid 145 to 150 10 inch circles at 40 yards. And I think that is about as good as 9s will do, unless you just have the magic gun.

200 is going to be a stretch consistently. I honestly don't think it will happen with either 9s or 9.5s. 175 maybe. You will have to go to 10s to have hope getting to 200 in my opinion. I will be loading some 10s for mine, as I see it as the best size for the .410.

Back to the 278 count. I do not for one moment believe that happened at 40. If so, he should have bought a lottery ticket right after he shot it. I could see that happening at 30 yards. Especially with 9.5s. Little far fetched from my experience.

I love the 10 pellet count and know it kills, I haven't seen a real good straight 10 pattern for its pellet count. I know a 10x9 will get in the 200s. Got a buddy who goes well into the 200s with it but I was kinda looking to do it with 9.5s. I think he is 180s with 9s

I agree on the the 278. It is hard to buy considering I can count more pellets than the load even holds. Maybe it's an inside joke.

The guy that shot 278 in the 10" was Ritchie Doss and it was at 40 yards and it was with 9.5's, if Ritchie says it was 40 yards then I honestly believe him and he said it was from his very first shot and he has never been able to duplicate it. here is a copy and paste to the post where I think reminex may have seen it

The saga continues. But nevertheless I have a true killer on my hands.

Here is the story ,
40 yards
Mossberg 500/ .410
Sumtoy .385 choke
Vortex venom

First time I ever shot it with tss I got a mind blowing 278hits in the 10 with Apex 9.5 ......I don’t know what happened , but everything lined up and it is what it is. Never could duplicate it ...

So with the Apex load 9.5 I’m getting consistent 160-170 in the 10.

So for giggles I have some #10 tss and I just shot this one today , albeit I have to adjust my poi it put up 208 hits in the 10!

I absolutely can’t wait to kill a gobbler with this little .410. I believe I got me a good one

I was just curious how there's 370 countable pellets in a shell that holds 366 more than anything else. Doesn't even make sense if it was a 30 yard shot if you see the pattern. I just wander if there was a misunderstanding like that cardboard had already been shot and he forgot! He has an awesome setup either way. Maybe apex was trying out a resin buffer and let one slip in a box on accident?

I have once so far. I have a Mossberg .410 with a .385 Comp N Choke. I was shooting Hal’s 370NM load. I tried a couple of different sizes and some duplex loads. Image

First year trying tss. The 410 is one that I would like to try (870 fixed full). If my patterns look close to those my 12ga may not see the field again! I am looking forward to trying the 20 with tss, mostly to get a great pattern for my boy (can kill to 40 but good patterns at 20-30). There are worse things one can spend their money on. I gave up women and the bar. OK, that is partly true, I got married (note, I did not say beer). But as long as she gets her fun money and the bills are paid she doesn't care. Yes, she does have sister, no you are better off without her, trust me. She is already sorta somewhat taken, and I am just going to let this go at this point. As Mrs. bush said "just say no".

Oh, back to the op subject, I could kill out to 25 ish with the 410 with lead. Patterns pending, Looks like 410 at 40 is the new norm for tss 40+)..

Seems like I am a magnet to things that cost money, hunting, fishing, trapping, shooting turkeys with very expensive shot... What's next? Oh I know, I am going to buid a shot trap, then I am going to buy more shot. Well that might happen, but I may buy some shot from hal. Turkeys are easy to kill, yotez, sorta somewhat.

Is everyone cleaning their barrels thoroughly between shots? I ran 10-12 dove loads through my SA410 before shooting a legend 10 load at 40 yards. I got 147 in the 10, it’ll hunt no doubt most my shots aren’t past about 35 being that I hunt the woods mostly. But I can’t help but want to perfect it to get what some of y’all are getting. knowing I could squeeze more out of it just needing some advice. Also choke was an Indian creek .380.

Definitely needs to be cleaned for best results
