Anyone recommend a factory .410 shell

Post by killdee »

My buddy had surgery and has been restricted to no heavy recoil guns for 3 months, great timing huh? Any recommendations for a factory load that would give him a 25-30 yard chance with my old bolt action Jc Higgins .410? It's not marked as for the choke but hopefully it's full. I'll shoot it this weekend with what I have and see how it patterns.
I don't have any 410 components or roll crimper to load him some tss out of my stash, unless I could find someone to see me enough components, less powder and tss if so I would be glad to pay a premium + shipping if anyone would be so generous, and I'll order a crimper and get a recipe from Hal.
Thanks Killdee

At 25, 7.5 pb should do the trick. A few years back I bought some "Hevi Duck" in 7.5. I guess they still make it. What about a gas operated 20 with 2-3/4" shells?

A gas 20 might be another option but Neither of us own one. I have a selection of .410 in HB1135 fps 11/16 ^ winchester.Express along range 7-1/2 remington and federal hi power 8's. I'll test these and see if I get a descent 25-30-yard pattern.
Thank you

I am going to take a .410 along with me as well as my 870 youth 20ga. this season, the .410 will have a 3 in. Federal 6 shot lead, just in case the opportunity presents itself, .410 is a fixed modified choke.

My J.C. Higgins bolt action is a full choke. Most likely yours is too. PM me your address and I can send you some hulls, wads.and overshot cards.
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

I'd run the hevi loads if you could find them. Other than that 7.5 lead will kill the snot out of them as long as you find where you can consistently get 100 in the 10 and call it max. I think you'll be lucky to get to 25yds.
