who is shooting a 28 ga pump?

Post by hawglips »

I'm looking to expand my 28 ga arsenal into the pump realm.

Who has one they really like?

I have an Ithaca M37 in 28 gauge. I use it for small birds; never carried it for turkeys. 6 lbs. even. Threaded for chokes, vent rib. Pedro has one as well. Here is mine with a snipe:

I have the m37. Probably going to use exclusively this season from doves through late season geese. It carries very well and is quality all the way. The factory full did not patten all that well for turkeys.

I just use a bag and a flashlight. Your method seems to work better.

I'd rather buy batteries than 28 ga. shells.

True:) Found 2 cases at the local pawn shop Wednesday and was able to get them for $90 each. One was Rio and the other Winchester Super X High Brass. Both 1 oz loads.
Normally they seem to be about $100 on sale.

Hal, I am using a Remington 870 express 28 gauge pump. I really like the gun, lots of room for upgraded parts on the 870 platform. I already bought a threaded 870 28 gauge barrel for the gun to replace the fixed modified choke barrel that came with the gun. I just need to buy my choke for it now. I am going to go with a Briley extended, either full or xf, just haven't decided. But this is not the cheapest setup. With the barrel, it cost about 700.

By the way Hal, did you ever try that custom .520 trulock choke yet with the 28 gauge?
Thanks

Hal, I shot skeet friday and one of the guys I shot with was shooting a mod37 28ga. It was a beauty. The reciever was scaled down from the 20. Lite and perfectly balanced. Great all around 28ga

Hal:
I love my BPS 28. Shoot either 28" or 26" barrels. It is my squirrel and rabbit gun. Wingshooting I usually use a sxs or o/u. Love those 28's. I also have a Browning Model 12 in 28 ga. Never have shot it.

There were "timing" issues initially relating to cycling on the M37 in 28 gauge when it was first introduced, but those have long since been resolved. The gun is built on a scaled 28 gauge action as opposed to a "one size fits all" approach used by other gun manufacturers who use one action frame size for two or more gauges. This factor attributes to the reason it is the lightest of the discussed pumps in 28 gauge. Out of the box, there is no better trigger. Gil

Hal, keep us posted on your experience with it. Chokes, loads, etc.
Are you going to paint or dip it? ;)
How you like the trigger?
I hope you enjoy it. You won't wear it out.

I haven't shot it yet, so not sure about the trigger. Was hoping to do it this afternoon, but not sure I'll be able to get things done in time.

I want to take it out after doves and ducks this fall. It throws up just right for me.

I got the 28" barrel and plan on trying the full choke with the 1-5/16 and 1-1/2 oz loads before I buy any other turkey chokes. Will probably get me a skeet and an improved modified flush mount choke from Briley off the bat though. But, no, I won't be dipping it!

I went out Saturday morning after some doves in the wake of tropical storm Hermine, and had almost no action. So, I took it back out yesterday morning after some crows and gave it a fair workout.

I went through a box of shells and did OK. Missed a lot of shots I should have made and made some pretty nice ones. But I love the way it handles, points and shoots. I'm really going to enjoy it I believe. Planning on taking it out after some woodies in a few weeks.

Had steady action over decoys, but with most shots being a bit on the long side from 40 to 60 yds. I was shooting 3/4 oz of TSS #10s (field research) and killed a couple that I picked up 60 yds away including a quite high one. All the misses seemed to be shooter error - I have a bad habit of not getting my head down on the shots when I have a long time to think about them. I shot a box of shells with 11 crows and 1 bonus dove bagged.

This Featherlite M37 is going to be one of my favorites, I'm certain.
