28 ga dove load
What's everyone's favorite load for doves in the 28? Thanks

Re: 28 ga dove load
I like and use the AA 3/4oz of #8s. Plenty of penetration for longer shots on mourning doves and enough pattern density for mourning doves. They don't work as well for Eurasions, for them I like to move to a #7.5s. Gather up your hulls, I sell the hulls for $15/100. If you buy the AA with the winchester rebate you can shoot these for about $4-$5 a box.
For no tox upland areas, I reload my own steel 300 grains of #7s using BPI data for about $6/box which is much better than typical cost for 28ga no tox of $15/box.

I shoot Rio 1oz #8. If you catch them on sale they go for about $9+ a box which is acceptable to me. I would rather shoot the 28 at doves than my 20 even if the shells cost twice as much as the 20.

Thanks for the replies. I too like the AA 71/2,8, and 9s Are you using TPS wads in your steel loads? Rolling or fold?
Around these parts, rios are only available in 12 or 20, and they are pretty limited at that. There 1 ounce load does sound interesting though and I would jump on them for 9 a box. I to would rather pay double to hunt with 28s and 410s than to shoot a 12 or 20
Does anyone have a favorite recipe for hand loading in aa hulls or chedites? Looking for a fast, light load to burn some butt feathers. I'm not asking for direct data, simply suggestions as to where to go. Thank y'all.

Yes, I use the TPS wad with a fold crimp. I run the 300 grains at 1375fps and the load requires no spacers and I can easily load 100 rounds in 1 hour on a single stage MEC. The downside is I shot about 500 rounds of these last year and had a hard time keeping up with my demand.
Alliant Pro Reach Data is some of the best for speed burning lead with 28ga AA. You can get the data on the website.

Re: 28 ga dove load
I'm tempted to try some TSS #10s this year out of the 28 ga for doves if the situation is right. They give 1.25" to about 50+ yds. I'm thinking about 9/16 or 5/8 oz....

Re: 28 ga dove load
Are 10s the smallest TSS available?
Re: 28 ga dove load
If you could get some 12 shot it might be worth a try to use it for doves.

Re: 28 ga dove load
You have 10's, Hal? Why am I not shooting these in the 410?
Feel, don't think. Trust your instincts.
Re: 28 ga dove load
No doubt they will be deadly if you can get the pattern open enough. I would probably start with a cylinder choke and go in about .003" if that isn't tight enough. 1/2oz gives you about 267 and 5/8oz about 333. To take advantage of the extra range, I would probably opt for the 5/8oz load to keep pattern density.hawglips wrote:I'm tempted to try some TSS #10s this year out of the 28 ga for doves if the situation is right. I would love to try that load, but on a good dove hunt, I will go through 50-100 shells and put down 20-30 doves. At that volume, it could get pretty pricey, pretty quickly.
Re: 28 ga dove load
I just got some, finally. No reason not to shoot them in the .410 - theoretically. I hope to pattern some before the month is out...Waddle Whacker wrote:You have 10's, Hal? Why am I not shooting these in the 410?
Re: 28 ga dove load
Yeah, that's the kicker. I'm thinking of doing it in the name of research....toasty wrote:hawglips wrote:...it could get pretty pricey, pretty quickly.
Re: 28 ga dove load
I'm a AA in 7 1/2 for doves
Re: 28 ga dove load
I like the AA 7.5 for dove. 8's are good enough for birds in the first of the season when they are not as heavily feathered nor as big; however, migratory birds in January can be tough to put down with 8's, especially on longer shots. Gil

I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have no need for a 30-06, I have a shotgun
