Tapping a Benelli

Post by 202P&Y »

Anybody had problems drilling and tapping an M2 20ga? Wanting to put an FF3 on it and heard the metal is thin. Any experience good or bad?

Thanks

My 1998 SBE was drilled and tapped for an old style Ampoint which is much larger and heavier than an FF3. No problems. Less worry, more drilling and tapping. ;) Gil

Drilled and tapped a few M1's, never a M2 but the M1's did fine.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects

I have no need for a 30-06, I have a shotgun

Tapping a Benelli

About to do mine. Benelli custom shop(Rob Roberts) does them. I think it is plenty thick enough to support FFIII. A scope would be a different matter.

Thanks for the replies fellas! What mount do you guys suggest for lowest profile? My ff3 came with picatinny mount, so do I need a weaver or like a 336. Kinda confused as what is best. Thanks again

The 336 mounts the optic lower to the receiver for sighting ease and probably also decreases the effect of recoil on the mount--less leverage that would result from a taller mount.

Called Benelli in December because I was going to buy my son a M2 20 gauge for turkey season for this year and I ask if it was ok to have a gunsmith to drill and tap receiver for a red dot. The gentleman told me he did not recommend me to have this done. The 20 gauge receivers are thinner than the 12 gauge receivers and by doing so may cause problems. He recommended getting a saddle mount instead. Hope this helps.

I have heard others say that. I talked to Benelli warranty department last week about my M2 20 POI problems then also asked about drilling and tapping it. They told me it was fine. In fact pointed out they sell M2 20's that have been drilled and tapped. They assured me the M2 slug gun is exactly the same receiver and it comes D&T from the factory. Also they sell customized M2's where Rob Roberts has tapped them and they have FFIII installed from Benelli.

It is very odd some people who work for Benelli are saying this. Have heard this from several. Would be nice if Benelli reps all had the same story. :violent1: :violent1:

Maybe some folks are saying not to tap for liability, who knows? What did he say about your poi?

Tapping for a reflex sight is no issue. I could maybe see if you was mounting a 20+ ounce 30mm tube. You don't even have to drill all the way thru the receiver to mount a 336 base with 8-40 screws
