Bakal Russian 12 over 6.5 X 55

Post by Gobbler »

I bought this gun 2 years ago. I am finally taking it to Rhino Choke in Sumpter this week.

I am going to see if they can make the ultimate Florida hunting gun out of it?
I want to have it threaded to receive chokes. Its a 12 gauge over a 6.5X55 Swedish round.
I want to put a scope on it. and I want it raised so I can see through it. To see the shot gun sights.

I want to be able to shoot a tight pattern out to 35 to 39.99 yards.
I want to sight gun in for possible 100 and less yard rifle shots.

If all this is possible I will have it dipped in camo. The project starts.

Holy Crap that would make an awesome Deer Gun when running dogs. Buckshot in the 12 and a rifle if they don't come in shotgun range. What's the equivalent to the 6.5X55? .243?

Them Swedes kill lots of moose with the 6.5 x 55.

Splittoe, The round is like a 270 maybe. Gun doesn't kick when shooting the rifle part. But has some kick with the 12 gauge.

I plan on Deer and Hog hunting. But if a gobbler wanders buy within range I want a 3" shell in there for him. It happens a lot. When I spring Turkey hunt I always run into a Hog. When I'm Fall hunting I always have a rifle and a Gobbler walks by. :dontknow: Maybe this will help. :D

If you look up ballistics its all about grains.
I would compare the 6.5 to a 308, but I think the 308 would have the upper hand. That's just my opinion though. That Krag round is like a 7mm mauser. Kick ass gun!

I totally agree with you, but don't we have laws down here against having rifle rounds loaded while bird hunting?

Update... Dropped the gun off at Rhino Chokes in Williston Florida. They are going to thread the barrel. Polish the barrel. Mount Hi viz sights. Mount see through scope and if it needs anything else call me. Port it if it will reduce the kick.

Then I will need a Camo dipper that has old green bottomland. :D

Sounds like a great Florida gun. The 6.5 x 55 Swede is closer to the .260 Remington (same bullet) than either the .243, .270 or .308. Hard to imagine a better deer caliber (hogs too for that matter). Low recoil and with the right bullet, punches way above its weight class. As someone mentioned, it's the most popular caliber in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries for killing Alg, which are similar in size to our moose. Keep us posted when you get it back.

Got my gun back. It was threaded and a .670X2" Rhino turkey choke put on it.
My next step is barrel polish and optics.

Any suggestions would be appreciated because I am new to doing things to guns other than shooting and cleaning. Especially on optics.

Nice combo. Looking to see a pattern, to see how far away a gobbler has to hang up, before the rifle comes into play!!!! :violent1:

Nice try. I am building this gun for fall hunting. I always let gobblers walk when deer or hog hunting. Hopefully not anymore. Last fall I had Two gobblers yelping each other up with me in the middle. I didn't shoot at 25yrds with my rifle. Plus in the spring I'm always running into hogs and yotes. I'm an opportunist not a poacher.

That's a cool lookin over & under ! If you're not going to take any super long shots I would put a Leupold vx2 3x9 scope on it.

Gobbler, if you are going to sight in for 100 yds or less, have you considered a red dot system? Compact, light and will do the trick nicely at the ranges you seek, especially if it's a double-duty turkey gun. Gil

PS Baikals, Saigas, are made in Izhvesk, the "Armory of Russia" where Kalashnikovs are made.

doug, you should get a EOtech for that gun. 65 MOA w/2 dots. they run around $500 but why cheap out on a great gun?? That site is perfect for rifle and shotgun, it would make a great combo site for that gun. also EOTech makes a dropaway 5x multiplier that you can put infront of the 65 MOA site. i think you would love that set up!

here is what the set up is....you could get it mounted right on a picatinny rail or weaver style easily.

the sight just drops to the side when your not using it. its a great invention. i used this set up in the military and have one on a RRA 308. you cant go wrong with this set up!
