Here is what I do with my Mini DV video. I burn the video on to a DVD and then upload the DVD into my laptop. Works just fine for me.

I have no idea how Mike goes without using a tripod. You can never have too much video just keep it on. You can always edit. Because as soon as you turn it off something amazing will happen.
