Re: 410?
The tungsten shells have really increased the options for turkey hunters since you last hunted them. If you want the 20 gauge BPS for purposes other than turkey hunting, you can load your own shells down to whatever level you want. A one ounce 20 gauge load in the BPS would be very low recoil, but s...

Re: Perfect barrel length
I like 24" on a sxs, and wouldn't mind a pump or auto being a few inches shorter. The shorter the barrel, the more the shot is going to damage your hearing, and I don't wear hearing protection when turkey hunting.

Re: Rib Mount Reflex sight mounts
Sumtoy did some machining on the receiver of my Yildiz sxs so that he could make a 336 mount sit level. He then drilled and tapped 2 holes to attach it. It's a dedicated turkey gun, so it doesn't matter that a permanent change has been made to it. This makes it possible to get the FF3 all the way ba...

Re: Shooting hen turkeys
Lovett Williams said that there is no biological reason to ever shoot a hen, and he didn't know why any state allowed it. I agree on both points, but I also realize that what is considered ethical depends on the traditions of a region and they are not the same. Turkeys don't overpopulate the way tha...

Re: Just When I Thought Hunting Season Was Over...
Not really a big deal to have a Yahoo around. Our dogs used to tree them pretty often when we were squirrel hunting back when I was a kid. I can still see my grandfather hurrying to our dogs barking treed, only to get there and yell out in disappointed voice, "It's a dadgum Yahoo!". He did...

Re: New regulations for SC
Historically, I think you would be right. Early in the seasons dominant birds often have large harems of hens and therefore gobble little after flydown and are essentially uncallable. They account for a big part of the breeding, so turkeys had a built in protection against this early overharvest of...

Congrats! I have killed my AL limit and used the Rivercane on 4 of them. I was pinned down on one and could only use the mouth call. I like using the combination of the mouth call and the Rivercane.
Many thanks to GLS for teaching me how to make these.

Re: Too Tight
Wow! 87 and still turkey hunting! It's extremely unlikely that I will live to be 87, much less still be turkey hunting at that age, but at 65 I've had to make a lot of changes to my setup to avoid missing turkeys. Changes in my eyesight have made it difficult for me to make consistent shots. I addre...

It looks to me like the dot is near the center on both patterns; it's just that the most dense part of the pattern is varying. I think it is within what I would consider "normal" variation. I've recorded 10" numbers of from 260 to 300 on my primary hunting gun. I see variation in patt...

Re: Anybody using standard chokes with TSS?
I use a 585 in the tight barrel and have gotten patterns from 260 to 300. This is a cheap Carlson's flush mount. I have shot a 273 in the same barrel with a 600 modified choke. This stuff doesn't require a lot of choke and I think a lot of people over choke it. I've found it pretty common to get tig...

Milestone will zap sicklepod at just one ounce per acre. I have put a pint of 2,4-Db into the tank with it, but I don't think it is necessary at all. I have had good results with an ounce of Milestone and 10 oz of Clethodim per acre.

Who is shooting the 20 ga MOA load at 2-1/8 oz? Any issues? I am shooting the 1-5/8oz load now, but if some is good, more is better I had that attitude too when I first started using TSS a decade ago. I don't believe you will ever kill a turkey with the bigger load that you would not have killed wi...

Re: Yildiz barrel selector switch
Thanks for the reply; I understand better what your problem is now. Any of the decent guns made after about 1930 should be ok to shoot TSS as far as the pressure goes. But it's a real problem to find a reasonably priced sxs with 2 triggers to use for a turkey gun. One of the older Berettas made from...

I've had a cheap Tasco 8x21 in my vest for many years. The only time I use it in the south is to determine if a distant turkey is a gobbler. I had a problem with it and just bought a new one - $14.

If I knew a good gunsmith I might would get him to weld the switch where it couldn’t go left and right. Only fire and safe. Dang, you guys must be having far worse issues with this than I have. On mine, you can't push the safety forward to fire if it is right in the center. It has to be either to t...

Re: Yildiz barrel selector switch
My 20 gauge has the same issue. I have found that if I keep it as far to the right as it will go, then it's easy to just slide it forward and shoot the right barrel first. That's the one my turkey choke is in, so that's usually what I want anyway on my turkey gun. It is difficult enough to manipulat...

Lots of stuff here, including gobbling activity on a hunted area and average date of nest initiation. The most relevant info to what is being discussed in this thread is in fig. 4-2, page 18.
