Re: got my first entry for the contest
looks very cool with the coloration. definite subspecies hybrid crap goin on. Her secondaries were light compared to most birds in the area, and her primaries were pretty dark. You can see that a little in this picture. http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff168/hawglips/IMG_0175.jpg But her white ba...

Re: got my first entry for the contest
I hope the kill story is soon to follow. Did he strut and gobble the whole way? On a string? Or did he come in silent? :struttin: It took me all day to kill it. I flushed a bird off the roost on my way in and since he didn't fly off but about 30 yds, I just sat down right there, got my calls out, a...

Re: got my first entry for the contest
Maybe he will score better in the culinary division of the contest. Sometimes these kind entries are delicious. :D I'll enter him in that division then -- Christmas dinner. I've still got a couple bigger ones in the freezer from the spring but this one cut up so nicely I'm going to move h...

got my first entry for the contest
He's not going to score much though. Only weighed 8 lbs and he's got no spurs or beard. I don't know what's wrong him. But I'm on the board!

Re: handling this?
Well, here's what I decided to do. And humor me a bit here... Like I said before, I never considered leaving him or waiting or busting the hens. The hens didn't bother me at all, except to keep me from going where I wanted to. I felt penned down with very few options as far as setting up was concern...

Re: handling this?
Both of those responses are very interesting, and to be honest, I never even considered any of the things mentioned so far in the first two responses. :o Thanks for putting those out there. I think it's natural to get in a comfort zone, and it's good to hear other ways of approaching the same situat...

handling this?
Ronnie's discussion about pecking order brought to mind a situation I encountered a while back. Since there are a lot of ways to skin a cat, I was wondering how others might have handled it. I located a gobbling bird at daylight my first morning of a 3 day hunt in TX. I was way off, and by the time ...

Re: Reasons?
I have convinced myself that the pecking order can be a big obstacle. I think in some cases MacDaddy has drawn a line in the sand or in this case the turkey woods and certain birds are afraid to cross it. How far fetched does this seem to some of you? Be honest, if you think its a load of crap say ...

Re: Whats your thought process?
I don't live close enough to turkeys to do any scouting, other than to familiarize myself a bit with the land. But here's what I typically do. I first look at the area on Google Earth and get a feel for the drainages and trees, roads and fields, etc. I mentally mark areas I want to try, and come up ...

Re: What is the plan for afternoon hunting?
I've got one area I've hunted that last couple years that are a hot mid-day/afternoon gobbler hang-out. I've hunted there 4 times, with 4 dead gobblers coming to the call to show for it. I recommend finding a place like that to spend some time in the afternoon.

Re: NWTF
I quit a while back due to the shift from being a turkey hunter's organization to something I didn't really recognize. That along with the feeling that they were more about the money than the wild turkey. But I recently joined back after the magazine started improving and they appeared to be listeni...

Whats the best way to get Jakes in gun range. I like carrying them out of the woods better than heavy longbeards. I also have a hard time killing them. I really wanted to kill one last year, but longbeards kept coming in instead. The only one I got in a talking conversation with, he just wouldn't g...

Re: Heavy Hunted Public Land
Kinda suprised that you didn't have a recommendation from guesswho on there because without it the others mean nothing. How do I set up my blind at 2 am isn't it too dark out? I prefer not to use a blind at that time of night, but just slip a decoy on my head and ease in to gun range. They think it...
