Re: Once in a while you splurge
Probably in the 120s based on the time and color, but I didn't probe it. I sear them in duck fat at what Hank Shaw calls a "jocular sizzle", putting pressure to hold them flat with a spatula, flip them when the skin is done just right, salt the skin side, and give about the same amount of ...

Oh man that steak looks just about perfect to me. I swear I could taste it just looking at the picture. Beautiful.

Turkey Men, Volumes 1 and 2
I've been really enjoying Thomas Pero's two volume set, Turkey Men, from Wild River Press. Mr. Pero interviewed a dozen turkey hunters that have completed the US Super Slam. The US Super Slam isn't in the cards for me, but I've gotten a lot of insights from the interviews into how they approached new...

Re: Mescalero Rez Hunting in New Mexico
I drew to hunt there last year. The woods were exceptionally dry. A shovel and fire extinguisher in every vehicle was mandatory or you weren't allowed to hunt and they didn't tell you that until you checked in. Bird numbers were okay and we had a good time regardless, but nothing like the old days D...

Re: Coffee..
Mostly use an AeroPress for coffee here. Makes a concentrate. Low acid. Dilute with hot water to taste, or not.
Nothing breakable, easy to travel with or take to camp. We get our coffee from a local roaster that
specializes in dark roasts.

Nice. Love me some Blue Grouse. Not sure why they changed the name to dusky grouse though? They will always be blue grouse to me and they are outstanding table fair. I'm with you on the name change. Based on the DNA, split into two species, but I never liked it. Hunted Blue Grouse for 20 years here...

NM Dusky grouse
Took my lab out for some grouse hunting in northern New Mexico. We didn't find much, but we didn't get skunked, she had a blast, and I got to stretch my lungs out a bit.

Re: Eastern "Mountain" turkeys
Herb McClure’s book Native Turkeys is an interesting read about remaining pockets of pre restocking populations in the North Georgia mountains. He describes them as looking quite different from the restocked birds. From the book description: “... master hunter and woodsman Herb McClure of Cleveland,...

Fly fishing trip to Southern Colorado
One antidote for turkey season withdrawal for me is fly fishing for trout. In early June we went to the upper Rio Grande and tributaries near Creede, Colorado. The severe drought meant that the water levels were much lower than usual for that time of year, but it also meant that the fishing was some...

Hart, thanks for the pic. I like that pattern. Very uniform. I hope mine does as well. It's driving me nuts that I won't be able to pattern mine for a couple of weeks.

I wouldn't be surprised if they'll make you whatever LOP you want, but they make the stock in two standard LOP, 13.5" and 12.5". Which one are you using? I’m short.. so sitting down youth stocks are almost perfect. Some are too short, but some are just right Mine is the 13.5, but I could ...

Hey Brice, Your post from a while back is what set me off on this Savage 220T. Sloppy and Clark Bush gave me encouragement and answered questions I had before taking the plunge. I called the Savage custom shop back in mid March, spec'd everything out, and then formally placed the order through my lo...

Raps, guy got shot in the back during the 1st week in the cornfield right above Brunelles Marina this year. He lived but has about 30 pellets still embedded in muscle and fat. Heard about that from my sister. Happened just before I got there. I was told it resulted from a hunter taking a shot at an...

Welcome. This is a great place. I grew up in Western Mass (South Hadley) and hunted and fished all over that part of the state. I go back to visit family and old friends and hunt turkeys every year. Had to smile when I saw the "Western Mass". Reminded me how we all make that distinction to...

No, that's a good number for 50 yards. It would imply something like 280 to 290 at 40 yards, a good place to be.
