Re: help me buy my first turkey gun
Break actions are easier to deal with in the woods, especially for a newer shooter. Academy Sports will have a youth version of the Yildiz 20 gauge over/under. The regular full choke with Federal heavyweight shells would be a good bet. I'd get someone else to pattern the turkey shell and only fire t...

Is this a CZ Bobwhite? That number has style.

Re: yildiz 410 over and under disassembly
I think the Yildiz barrels are chrome lined. Inside is "regular", outside is black. I looked at a .410 o/u at Academy yesterday. That small frame was enticing. Really wish they did their 28 on the smaller frame instead of the 20.

Thanks. Yes, Sumtoy threaded the barrel and made the choke. I just sent the barrel with a note stating what I wanted to do with it.
Oh, and I did hit a little low. Pattern's so tight there were only a few pellets in the breast, though.

Re: Normalcy check
Maybe the 3" shell makes a smoother transition from chamber to bore? And, yeah, that extra space needs some shot in it. I'm going to try to find a way to fill it with lead 7.5s to reach sq. in the tops of tall trees.

Re: Henned up theory busted
What I have seen since opening day is that with the population dip, they're contracting to core areas and being more sociable. I think turkeys being social animals means they need affirmation of contact with other turkeys. So, when there are less turkeys the ones that are left stick together more. T...

.410 works!
~30 yards. Bird just sorta shuddered and rolled backward at the shot. It started flopping a lot about a minute or less later. It was for sure dead, though. Think I mighta hit a little low due to astigmatism making it hard to see around blurry dot or maybe I just missed my mark. If I did I'll be hear...

Re: Camo pattern on White Fabric
Old army BDUs in woodland camo still work. They come in a variety of sizes. It is safer to avoid having red, white and blue on or about you while in the turkey woods.

Normalcy check
So I got ~130 in 10" at a taped 40 yards with the .410 #9 1/2 TSS load. I brought it in to a taped 35 yards today to finalize the zero. I got ~180 in the ten for two shots. Only difference besides distance was dirty barrel on the 35 yard shots. (My forty pace limit in the woods is actually 35 y...

Re: Gobbler or Jake?
I thought the rust stuff at the end was because of how it grew, but the beard had not got long enough to wear off. I killed a kinda light bird that had a beard maybe 8" once. It had that rusty tip, acted 2 y.o. and had regular spurs. I killed a runty mossyhead yesterday that had that and about ...

Re: Push Pin Callers
I've heard turkeys that sound just like the Camp Caller my wife has. The rubber band design makes it fairly quiet to carry vs some others. Story: I was selling one. Fella asked to hear it over the phone. I think this is odd because I can't tell much over the phone. People do it, though, I know. Long...

Back when we had plenty of birds you could catch them alone like that. Past few years they've been henned up well into the afternoon.

Henned up theory busted
Back years ago when dealing with henned-up gobblers it was popular among some of us to wish for a fall season to thin out the hens. (I have always wanted to shoot a hen, but for different reasons.) Now, many of us are dealing with populations that have dwindled to the point where hearing a gobbler i...

Re: Shotgun vs. Archery Season
Turkeys start the Spring gobbling, but they're not breeding heavily. That's good hunting. Then they start breeding and there's not so much gobbling or coming to call. That's a good time to plant your garden. Then the peak of breeding passes. They don't gobble as much, but they'll come to call more e...
