Re: Suggestions for My Mossberg Gun Stock & Forearm

It'll look sharp with a hand rubbed linseed oil finish. Depending on how light it is, you might get by with just linseed oil after sanding and raising hairs and sanding. If it is very light stain it before oiling. Reminds me I have an A-Bolt Medallion stock to strip and do. Or just Krylon it. Also i...

Re: Buying a new O/U for dedicated turkey rig 20 or 28?

I have a Stevens 555 in 28ga. Shoots great pattern with a Carlson sporting clay XF .526. But it does double fire on me. Poa vs poi was about 5in at 40yrds dead on left an right. I'm just run the top barrel til season is over. Going to be giving savage a call in the next few days Asking for Joel mig...

Re: Buying a new O/U for dedicated turkey rig 20 or 28?

Just got off the phone with Savage. Their method of checking POI is at 25 yards looking for a pattern matching the choke in a circle around the bullseye. They said they'd call me back if they figured out if there was an actual control limit for POA vs POI and barrel regulation. As it stands, if they...

Re: Buying a new O/U for dedicated turkey rig 20 or 28?

POA vs POI impact varies. The thing is whether you can get them to correct it if it is off. How far does a Stevens have to be off before they consider it outside their QC limit? I happened to call galleryofguns about the Stevens last week. They said their limit is whatever the manufacturer says. Sav...

Re: turkey seat butt hurt

The Cabelas lounger design is hard to beat if you can use it. It has a slight rattle to be careful about. It is not so handy if you have to move on a bird multiple times. Can't beat just a pad for that. The triple layer 2" thick Thermaseats are good pads. A lounger and a 3.5# gun pretty much el...

Re: Unresponsive

They've been breeding heavily. In deer hunting we call this the October lull. Most of what people do hunting-wise in this phase of the season is condition birds to disassociate distant calling with hens or, worse, to associate distant calling with hunters. You're gonna want to get your squash transp...

Re: Hows your hearing???

Ambient noise isn't the only thing that damages your ears. Vibration from the gun stock tucked up close by seems to do it, too. Being sinistral, that's why I have the most high frequency damage in the left ear and not the one that is pointed more toward the muzzle. Longer barrels and standard veloci...

Re: Reflex Sight with Green Dot

Gets 3/5 on amazon reviews. Also, in case anyone was wondering, Sightmark does not sell the shield part separately. I asked. They got back tout suite. According to the original post it appears some people are able to keep both the sights and bird in focus at the same time. What is that like? The onl...

Thanks. Stevens 555 I looked at was a righty. I'm going to try to find some to weed through to find a neutral, I think.

Re: Flush turkey choke

Does the factory full in the bottom barrel of my 20 gauge count? Federal Flite Control loads work well 99% of the time with the factory flush choke. I had good luck with their 3" 2oz #5 shell for several years. Had to shoot twice a couple times due to that wad not being consistent unless you us...

Re: 28 gauge ATI Calvary

There's a pretty detailed review on here by...toasty, I think. Upshot is they might be a hair rougher than the Stevens 555 version. I was looking at getting one through galleryofguns for the lifetime warranty. Need to check with ATI or Stevens and galleryofguns to see how close they warrant the barr...

Re: Missed one today with TSS! (first time using TSS)

I missed one the other day. I know the sucker is OK, though, because it ran right by me at ten yards after I shot at it. I jumped up and was turning the gun to swing the butt at his head when he got his wings going. (Hey, I shoots I makes my best effort to end it ASAP.) They had me all kinds of work...

Re: Shotguns that don't need optics (need one)

I'm with you on not liking sights, etc. I do otherwise where necessary, but anything other than putting that white head on top of the brass bead offends my sensibilities. I use just the bead on my 20ga Yildiz O/U. Those Federal #7 loads are pretty tight, too. We've posted on this before, but the sho...

I like to use my kids as excuses to buy new shotguns. The next one will probably be a 28 gauge O/U. The Stevens 555, or apparently ATI Cavalry, weigh less than 5 pounds.

Turn back now if you have anything else you like to do in the Spring. (Nobody ever listens to that.) If you want to shorten your learning curve, ditch the blind and dekes. Get copies of Kenny Morgan's books and Lovett Williams' CDs.

I just saved you three years. Good luck!
