Re: Spur length and Turkey age
Good article with a lot of truth in it. I had never read it before, but I know the author well and will ask him about it next time I see him.
I can't imagine a 2 year old gobbler having 1.5" spurs; must be more to the story.

Re: Spur length and Turkey age
Missouri did a tagging study where a substantial percentage of birds had shorter spurs on the second go round of being tagged. I’m at the beach or else I would look it up. It was something like 12-20%. There is a genetic component to spurs as well, some just aren’t ever going to to giants. I think ...

Re: Never walk to a dead gobbler without your gun
Funny stories, guys. I've done a lot of foolish things in my life, but leaving my gun behind and chasing a turkey is not one of them. I have often said I don't wanna do hand to hand combat with a turkey, and I never have. If it appears there is any chance he might recover, I just shoot him again. I ...

Re: Midwest turkey decline
I noticed just the opposite in NW KS. I've hunted the same area since 2007, and they have more birds now than I've ever seen there. I got into a flock of about 8 gobblers and 25 hens the second day. The place I hunted in OK seemed to be having an average year. I think the population in the Midwest i...

You wear those TX birds out every year - congrats again!
I've always found it enjoyable to end the season with a Rio hunt.

My Yildiz 20 gauge sxs weighs 5 lb 6 oz. The Ugartechea sxs weighs 6 lbs 1 oz. All my 12 gauge guns are in retirement as far as turkey hunting.

Re: How was your season?
I tagged out in 4 states and had my best season ever in terms of numbers. The area of GA that I hunted had more turkeys than I've seen since I started hunting it in 2004.

Re: why 9 over 8 tss?
After using TSS for 10 seasons, I'm convinced it doesn't really make any difference. You would have to get to extreme ranges to notice any difference in performance on turkeys.

Re: Hunting in Kansas next week, need advice
I hunted Monday and Tuesday in KS and heard all sorts of gobbling. I got one each day and probably could have limited out Monday if I had really wanted to finish early. If you have access to several places, riding the road at daylight to listen is a good tactic, but you can't move around after fly d...

Re: Barrel regulation
Are you guys filing the choke of fixed choke guns? Not sure I could bring myself to do that. I like my SxS guns for shooting things that fly or hop and my o/u for shooting clays. Never thought much about taking them turkey hunting. I can see the benefit to having that open choke barrel for when the...

Re: Barrel regulation
I answered your pm. That's very normal for a sxs to shoot tss in that manner - left barrel shoots left and right barrel shoots right. A lighter load will probably not be as far off, and a file will usually move the pattern so that both barrels shoot to same poi. Your gun was designed to shoot field ...

Re: I thought TX would rank higher for top Turkey hunting states?
Ranking states depends entirely on your perspective, and the writer of the article never really said. Best in regards to what? AL is great for the residents - we have a long season and a generous season limit, and that results in a lot of avid turkey hunters. But it's not so great for non-residents...

Thanks, Gil, I understand now.
I believe we have the same type of cane here in Central AL; I am gonna have to start looking for a patch that I can access.

Re: Rivercane Call
Gil, how are you gonna make any money if you give away all your secrets? :) That's very generous of you to explain all of that, but just reading your description I can tell there is more to it than many of us can manage. A supply of cane would be the first issue for me. Is this a species unique to S...

Rivercane Call
I've been carrying a trumpet with me for decades, and I've had a good quality Alan Sentell call for 7 or 8 years. I used just a cheap Penn Woods before that, and have always thought that a trumpet made a unique sound. My dad used a wingbone call that works on the same principle, but I've preferred t...
Re: which o/u
Doc, thanks for adding to the discussion. You have probably done more than anyone around to get folks turkey hunting with sxs guns, and the way you set them up makes sense. I'd consider lead for my open barrel if there were any way to get it to shoot close to the same poi as the tight tss barrel, bu...

Re: which o/u
Don't you all think that they all could send a gun out to the public that should at least be close!!! Of course they should, and I have found that most of them are. But again, the key thing to understand is that they have to regulate them for one type of ammunition, and that is usually a field load...

Re: What happened with this bird?
Turkeys being turkeys... Exactly what I thought as I read your post. I got on a gobbler this week that gobbled good, answered me, and moved about 300 yards towards me. My problem was that there was a hen about 100 yards from me and she was calling to him too. For a solid hour, we all 3 sat there in...
