Experiencing a lull
I haven't had as much time to hunt lately as I like (who does?) and work has been kicking my @$$. The mornings that I have been able to get in the woods it's only been for a few hours at a time and it has been exceptionally quiet. Had a jake and hen come in one windy morning, otherwise, the woods ha...

Re: A guarded patch of area
In the early 1980's I followed a trail through a cutover that was a little too beat down to be a deer trail. I found somebody's gardening that was rigged with a few kind of obvious booby traps. Left it alone for self preservation, because I knew some of the guys who lived around there and knew of th...

Hope this works. Give a monkey a stick of dynamite and a pack of matches, & eventually there will be a boom. This is what I do every day, rain, shine, snow, sleet. I run a feeder when I'm out of town. This video was done a...

Re: Deer must die
I feed the deer at my house every day & have for 27 years. I know the 11 members of this herd on sight and they know me. The great, great, grand daughter of the first wild deer that ever ate from my hand visits every day. I can call them like dogs & if they're within hearing distance, they c...

Stud! He has almost as much beard as my sister in law, though he's definitely got her in the spur department.

It's beyond personal at this point. That son of a gun used a ridge to skirt around me today. If he'd done that last year, I'd a smoked him from where I was set up then. It's almost like I've got a force field he won't penetrate. He's not making me crazy, buy he's definitely making me mad. Gotta admi...

Re: April 15th..
Think about the pollen if it hadn't rained. Though the rain has been brutal. The horse trails were like creeks this morning. Soft wet soil has cut down the amount of horse traffic, which makes for some good turkey hunting.

Had a different bird gobble from the creek bottom & called him in. Looked like a good 'un so I busted him @28 yards. 11 inch beard 1 inch spurs. He'll do fine. I might tag team that other bird with my best friend when he gets into town. Pics later.

First decent weather today, so I'm trying that bird on the big farm who hung up so bad on the logging road at the bottom of the bowl in the open hardwaads. He gobbled on the ground At 7:00 and jumped all over my calls, then skirted the ridge behind me looking for and calling the hen. He didn't make ...

Bit above the ankle by a 29" copperhead in my own garage. I was wearing tall rubber boots and my leg was towards the back of the boot. He punctured the boot and venom was on my Levi's. He died by a blow from a hockey stick.

Danner Pronghorn snake boots. All it takes is getting bit once by a snake to make wearing them worth it.

Don’t forget hearing aids WHAT?!? J/K. I did the walker thing when my pelvis was broken, it's definitely not the way to turkey hunt. I'm just a bit slower and not going up & down so many steep hills these days. I'll be 78 in 20 years...if I make it that long. We will still need trees for paper/...

Re: First miss in 3 years
I got the miss out of the way last year. Got in a rush and didn't let him step all the way out from behind a tree. It has only replayed 17,533 times in my mind since then too. Bet I don't rush the shot from here on for a time. At least it is behind you now and you can start a new streak. Good luck t...

I'm really looking forward to schooling that young fella on what to do and what not to do in the turkey woods. I went to turkey school the hard way and screwed up too much along the way without correction. They say that hard lessons learned are the easiest ones to remember. I never had anyone there ...

Good deed reward
I was asked by a buddy to take his neighbor kid turkey hunting. The boy's father works a lot and knows nothing about turkey hunting. My father didn't hunt and I owe a lot to friend's fathers who took me hunting, so why not pay it forward? Others taking me hunting changed my life for the better in a ...
