Re: Lone Gobbler Scenario
Perhaps what we need is a good belly crawling thread...been there done that. NWTF or OG or somebody would probably have a cow that we were really trying to sneak up on turkeys. But sometimes, especially late in the season, all's fair in love and turkey hunting.

Re: Temperature amd pattern testing
Cold air is more dense than warm air which means the molecules are packed closer together. Pellets encounter more resistance the colder and denser the air is and as a result spread apart faster, opening the pattern more quickly.

The Mossy sure does like that .575 choke, doesn't it? Those are some nice patterns. Shame about the POI/POA difference.

Looking good Shooter. Glad you took the time to preserve some memories. That's the best reason to preserve those trophies, the memories they bring back. I had this posted over at the old site, but don't think I have posted it over here. This is how I have mine displayed. I have a bunch more that I n...

Re: how would you handle this less than ideal scenario?
Great story, Hal. That's the cool thing about turkey hunting. I guarantee you had just as much fun as Karl did, and didn't even carry a gun. That doesn't happen deer hunting. Don't get me wrong. I love to deer hunt, kill half dozen a year, and love eating venison (having backstrap tonight in fact). ...

Re: Burris Fast Fires.....
Checked zero on the FF III on my Beretta O/U yesterday. It was 4.5" right and 2.5" high, but I was not surprised since it rides on a B-Square rib mount that I had removed for grouse season. POI was bound to change removing and replacing the rib mount, so that can not be blamed on the FF II...

Re: pattern at 50 yards
Don't know how long your barrel is or how much velocity you are actually getting. But at the advertised 1090 fps, KPY shows true size HS 7s have 1.09 ft-lbs of energy at 50 yds which equates to 1.22" of penetration in ballistic gel. I use 1.25" as a min. (some suggest 1.5"). So you sh...

Re: Forcing Cone Lengthening?
I've got to think it helps with lead shot, or all the best target guns in the world wouldn't have long FCs, but with HTL I don't know. I would definitely talk to William at Sumtoy chokes. He knows an awful lot about what makes shotguns tick, and he appears to be as honest as the day is long. I don't...

Re: A Good Friend left us today
Sorry for your loss. All of us that own or have owned dogs feel your pain. It's still really painful when I remember having to put down my male English Setter almost 3 years ago. Fortunately, I still have his daughter, although I had to retire her from grouse hunting this year. They sure do leave a ...

Sounds like great family time.
Re: holdover
IMHO, if you gotta use holdover, he is too far. The exception might be if you worked up a REALLY tight load of tss and had done a lot of shooting at long range. I think it would be possible to develop a gun/load combo with tss that would cleanly kill turkeys at 100 yds, but you would definitely nee...

Re: Roost or not to Roost
My hunting spots at home are usually a considerable drive from my house, so I rarely roost birds. About the only time I do that is when on an extended trip out of state, when saying close to where I am hunting and have nothing better to do in the evening than to roost a bird (no family or driving co...

Re: what choke tube?
I shoot my 26" 870 with a .660 jelly head, is that too tight for TSS? It would be too tight IMO. I tried a non-ported .660 in my Beretta O/U with just 1.25 oz of 9s. It wasn't over choked, but the pattern was too tight for hunting IMO. I am now using a non-ported .683 and am very satisfied. A ...

Re: what choke tube?
I shoot a non ported .675 in my 1187 (Rem HS SF)with TSS 8s and am well satisfied. A .680 should do fine as well. I think Hal uses a lot of Carlson's chokes with very good results. Expensive chokes are not needed with TSS IMO. Pretty easy to get patterns too tight.

Re: Cleaning your barrel?
When pattern testing, I thoroughly clean between every shot. My guns shoot better when scrubbed with solvent (Shooter's Choice) between shots. A bore snake will do in a pinch when on an extended hunting trip, but scrubbing ups my numbers. My hunting and clays guns get the bore scrubbed at the end of...
Re: holdover
My patterns drop about 6" @ 60 yds from a 40 yd zero. The pattern is big enough at 60 yds to cover that amount of drop. I haven't taken many long shots at turkeys and don't intend to. But where I normally hold on the waddles out to 50, I try to hold right on the bird's head at 60 and only shoot...
