Re: Thinning Out Hogs
Fortunately most of the hogs around here aren't the Eurasian strain that are in certain parts of the US. I've heard that they were released in Oklahoma and according to a man I communicated with, every year bird dogs are killed by the agressive Eurasian strain. Jamey, that's a pile of trapped hogs y...

Re: Thinning Out Hogs
Hog control is a hard nut to crack unless you can wipe out the entire sounder. A farmer buddy has just bought a remote control corral system in hopes of trapping the sounder. Rifle night work has made little impact for him. Hogs AND turkeys do a serious amount of crop destruction in his peanut field...

I don't know how long a brain can be tested for rabies after death or what steps are necessary to preserve the brain for testing. However, the normal procedure for ruling out rabies in low probability carriers such as domestic dogs, is to observe the animal for 10 days. While it may be the only thin...

Re: Help with red dot selection and research
If you have any questions, holler. The reason I went to a red dot in 1998 is I couldn't focus leaf and blade on sights in low light. The last straw was three flying down in the dark at 30 yards. Three shots and three birds flying away like launched from an aircraft carrier deck. Probably still flyin...

Re: To load or not to load that is the question?
I reload now while interest is still on go and before other distractions grab me. While my turkey hunting batteries are low by season end, they still have a little charge left. I wind it down by satisfying "wants" and "needs" and the two don't necessarily mesh. I'll buy calls, ma...

Re: Help with red dot selection and research
If you are going to get the Trijicon Reflex, you have a choice between Weaver and Picatinny bases. I chose Weaver for my guns because my SBE was already drilled and tapped for Weaver and my 835 and Super Bantams came pre-drilled and tapped for Weaver. My Ithaca was bought afterwards, but it was Weav...

Ported chokes can at times aggressively strip the wad defeating the design theory of the FC wad. The flite control wad of the Federal series works best without wad strippers according to Federal. At least that was my experience when I shot it in 12 gauge. Gil

At 40 yards, an 8 moa dot covers a 3.2" disk. At 20 yards, a 1.6" disk. 50 yards, 4" disk, 60 yards, 4.8" disk. At 40 yards, a 3 moa dot covers a 1.2" disk. At 20 yards, a .6" disk. At 50 yards, a 1.5" "disk, 60 yards, a 1.8" disk. I've had several sizes,...

Re: Help with red dot selection and research
Since you are considering Zeiss and Aimpoint, which are at the top cost-wise, I'd take a look at the Trijicon RMR. It doesn't use a battery, but has a combination of fiber optics and tritium lamp illumination. It is about the same size as the Fast Fire series. I have two of the earlier, clunkier, Re...

Re: A question on 20 gauge TSS range
Welcome aboard on your first post, trumpetman! Here's the tss rule of thumb: For each addition 10 yards after 40, the pattern will be 70% of the preceding pattern. Thus, 200 in the 10 ring at 40 will be 140 in the 10 ring at 50 and 60 yards, approximately 98. When discussing TSS, throw out all you'v...

Re: I found one of the problems...
Get a 12 gauge laser collimator, the type that fits in the chamber. Make sure it's oriented the same way each time you put it in the chamber. I mark a vertical hash and chamber it with hash at 12 o'clock. I use the collimator to get the red dot or sights zeroed at 20 yards. Once you fine tune with a...

I wish folks would take the time and update their atavars with at least a general location (state?) where they are from. I know where the regulars live, but it gives a better sense of community knowing where folks are from. I promise I won't poach your land and even if I did, wouldn't be much of a t...

Re: the most effective close-in call?
When they are close, I'd rather not use a call that depended upon hand movement. I prefer soft clucks on a diaphragm. I also like to keep both hands on the gun when they are in close which also rules out boxes or slates.
