Re: 16 Jakes
I never saw more than 12 at one time, but I saw 42 jakes the first 10 days of the season this year. I'm expecting a lot of gobbling on the farm next season.

Congrats on the bird and that's a great pic! Is that an M2? I handled one of those in a store last summer; its a great-feeling gun.
Would you like to trade it for a Yildiz SXS?

Re: Winchester Supreme shell question
I shot the HV Win Supreme in a 3.5" load with #4 shot for 5 or 6 years and had great results with them. With a .665 Kicks choke in my SBE they would put 110-120 pellets in the 10" circle at 40 yards, and still have 70-75 at 50 yds. I considered 50 yds the absolute max range with them, and ...

Re: Burris Fast Fires.....
Count me as another one that can't get a FF to hold zero. I bought a FF3 for the little Yildiz SXS 20 gauge, and William at SumToy figured out a way to mount it. His mount is rock solid and there is no chance it has moved, but the FF is all over the place. I have kept a record of the settings I use...

Wow! Thanks for posting that! Ryan was one of my students in HS, and I know most of the folks in the pictures. I knew Billy Jack Adams very well and I've played golf with 2 of the guys in the pics. I had never heard the song before.

William's chokes are built like a tank and will shoot most anything very well. You can't go wrong with one of his chokes.

Re: Previously Shot Turkeys
I'd say about 20-25% of the turkeys I kill have lead shot in them from somebody else; most of the time it is #6. One year I killed 7, and 4 of them had been shot before. I killed one in NE that had a big hunk of hevishot in his breast; no telling what size that was supposed to be. If you are gonna s...

Re: Preserving turkey beards
Looks good! I do mine that way too, but as mentioned above, I put the spurs on above the shell. I had never thought of doing this until reading about it on a turkey forum. All my beards and most of my spurs before 1999 were ruined
Re: holdover
IMHO, if you gotta use holdover, he is too far. The exception might be if you worked up a REALLY tight load of tss and had done a lot of shooting at long range. I think it would be possible to develop a gun/load combo with tss that would cleanly kill turkeys at 100 yds, but you would definitely need...

Re: What is the next old school?
BTW, killed my first gobbler in 1966 with a Win Mod 37 20 gauge. Called him up with a box my dad made. I think that qualifies as old school. ;) 1966, old school?? sounds like you skipped school that day. ;) Gil Naw, killed him on a Saturday while I was out of class from 6th grade. :) 1966 was about...

Like some of the other posters, I have lost most of high-frequency hearing, but still have normal hearing on the lower frequencies. I can't hear them gobble as far as I could when younger, but I can still hear one a long way. But I guess my hearing is still very good for low-pitched sounds, and I do...

Re: favorite turkey call?
I own a lot of calls that I have accumulated over the years. The past couple of years I've been trying to simplify and carry fewer calls. At the end of the season last year, my vest had a Dixie Darling box made by Jerry Gardner, an Alan Sentell trumpet, a slate call and a glass call made by Stony Br...

Re: The ole I shot a gobbler and he never flopped..
Nice pics! :) I'll bet those jumped all over the place after being shot. Some of the worst flopping birds I've ever shot were those that got the whole load in the head. I've shot a few over the years with lead that never flopped any, but it was always a shot that put a bunch of pellets in the body. ...

Re: Decoys ? Why Not ?
I'll just say that I agree with what Hal said, and add that for most of my life decoys have been illegal in AL. When they finally made them legal, I bought a single hen decoy and decided to try it one rainy morning when I had to set up in a deer hut. A gobbler came right to it, walked around it in f...

Get in the Game Chufa Growing Episode
Anyone else catch the Get in the Game Episode on growing chufas? I saw it was coming on and recorded it this past week; just now got time to watch it. It was the best program I've ever seen on growing chufas. If you missed it and have an interest in growing them, you oughta watch it. If you can't fi...

Re: May I Vent?
Preacher, I don't consider hunting deer with a handgun a handicap, in a lot of ways it's an advantage. The only gun I take to the woods (besides our late season rifle season) is my 500 S&W, I'll shoot groups at 75-100 yds just about as deadly and accurate as a shotgun from a bench rest. I could...

Re: May I Vent?
Anybody reading this has gotta be a serious turkey hunter. Unless its your desire to intentionally handicap yourself with your ammo, I can't see why anyone wouldn't contact Hal and buy some tungsten shot and load the best turkey shells you can get. This made me laugh. I'm a serious turkey hunter an...
