Re: Yellowstone

I haven't been in over 30 years. My buddies and I had annual trips starting in the late 70's to fish the area in the fall after the tourists went home. Back then, the streets of West Yellowstone were unpaved. Gil

Re: So ... ANOTHER old SXS

I wouldn't shoot a load of TSs without knowing pressures of TSS or without measuring wall thickness which requires a special type tool. Many of the TSS loads I am familiar with run up to the SAAMI limits and these old guns shouldn't shoot anything but low pressure loads. Is the gun Damascus barreled...

Re: Another Old SxS

Your uncle reminds me of the men I knew of an older generation during the time of quail plenty. One man always kept 6 pointers. Two pups, two young and two old dogs. Always had the age rotation in play. His son is a great friend who told me his dad grew up pre WWII and guided at a local resort and d...

Re: Another Old SxS

Over the years folks have shifted from the notion that Damascus barrels are "unsafe" provided no deep pitting or evidence of extreme honing to remove old pits. Minimum wall thickness is another consideration. Old proof marks indicate original bore diameter which when now measured will tell...

Re: Mushroom hunters????

Definite chant, past prime but still good in the pan. With all the rain we have had this summer we load up. I've made soup, quiche, smoothered sauteed chants over dove breast medallions and filled omelettes with them. Here's a bacon and chant quiche. Gil

Merino wool is amazing for odor control, warmth and comfort, especially socks. I bought at season's end some of First Lite's camo pants made with Merino wool and look forward to see how it weathers next spring. Gil

The old Brinkman style works great. A late friend gave me this tip for wild turkey. Early evening day before meal, fill up charcoal pan with a bag of charcoal, once the flames die from the starter fluid, add wood chunks, put the water pan on, filled, whole wild turkey (no stuffing) on the grill abov...

I wouldn't buy flip-flops from them. I had snake boots and 8" boots custom made after being measured by the owner. The 8" boots are fine; I couldn't get into the snake boots. Gil

Re: Top 8 Tips To Avoid Excess Baggage On A Flight

My parents during the last healthy year's of dad's life, traveled to England often when Delta offered cheap flights to London directly from Atlanta. They became masters of doing with less on trips. The only luggage taken was carry on and they didn't go to fancy restaurants or hotels. Once when mom a...

Re: Mossberg: Anyone Have An Inside Man?

You didn't say how old she is. You have other options from Mossberg other than the SA 28. The Super Bantam M500 is inexpensive in either .410 or 20 ga. Both are lightweight, and while fixed breech, can be downloaded into recoil friendly velocities and payloads. Gil

Hopefully she’ll be ready to join them this winter for woodcock and quail. The difference between American and...

Re: Rizzini Beccaccia 28 ga.O/U

I have two F.A.I.R. Rizzini SXS, 28 ga., and 16. Both are round action doubles with chemical case hardened colors; nice looking but aren't the bone and charcoal colors that was done in the old guns.

Rizzini Beccaccia 28 ga.O/U

While watching a recent TGS, at about 1:20, a Rizzini host features the above gun. It comes with an aluminum action, double or single triggers and screw-in chokes and 24" barrels. Designed with woodcock in mind, it would make an excellent lightweight turkey gun. It's not available in the US at ...

Re: Project gun with DIY paint job

Very nice work. I've Duracoated and rattle-can sprayed guns. My experience leads me to believe that the rattle-can application of a well prepared, degreased surface is better in the long run than a Duracoat or, gasp, a Ceracote finish for the simple reason that the latter two aren't easily repaired ...

Re: Over Under VS Semi Dove Guns

The Chessie has a well-earned reputation of being a one person dog and distrustful of strangers and slow to warm up to anyone new. Then there was Red, a Chessie, who was a small town dog that everyone knew. He was owned by retired physician in a middle Georgia small town of 2500 where my wife grew u...

Re: Over Under VS Semi Dove Guns

A good friend successfully field trialed a Chessie. He looked more like a Grizzly than a dog. Neva would get into my buddy's duck boat while he parked the truck and trailer. Another local hunter had a big lab that was aggressive to other dogs. Miserable to be around if you had a dog with you. Dog ma...
