Re: First bird with a 410
Congratulations!!!I’ve got the same gun but just haven’t got around to hunting with it yet. Did you have choke tubes installed in it? Mine just is full from the maker I am just shooting the full from the factory. Plenty good pattern at 40 yards from factory full. I had 300 in the 20" and just ...

Anyone other than alpha burnt experience with this gun? I've reached out to him, but I don't believe he checks in often. Is the rail, plastic or metal? I've seen a YT review that says plastic, but I'd rather hear something here. How is the rail attached? Weld, screwed, etc.? The rail system seems on...

Re: .410 or 20 for kids?
I have a different slant on buying a gun that can be used to hunt turkeys and small game. Most here have a purpose built turkey gun. Many of us rely on red dots for vision issues or curing poa vs poi in guns. I wouldn't go through the trouble of sighting in a red dot with TSS only to remove it at se...

Re: Pop, Pop, Boom.
Ken, I made the wingbone call close to 40 years ago. I primarily use it as a locator while trolling. The rivercane calls are for business as their volume is lower and tone softer than the wingbone or trumpets--at least in my hands. One has to know one's state law regarding possession of turtle parts...

This season, my first two birds fell to the “pop” of my Yildiz single-shot TK36 .410 shooting brass loaded with 13/16 oz. of TSS #9.5. A friend and I have through patterning and experience noted that this old subsonic load from Hal Abbott patterns better than his faster, heavier loads in our guns, b...

Spray up. These aren't your grandfather's ticks anymore. A friend almost died after a tick bite spending a week in the hospital. BIL developed Lymes after working on a remote barrier island off the coast years ago. He was constantly dealing with ticks. Gil

Re: Shot Removal after the Kill
After skinning the breast out, I look for shot holes. If there are some visible, I lay the breast in this jerky board, which has two depths. with the small board, I pressure downwards and use the knife to run through the breast with the knife slicing along the top of the jerky board and repeat as ma...

Re: Replacing battery on FFIII @#$%
A Duracell 1632 is the same size as any other 1632. The OG threads attached to Hognutz post shows the confusion arising when one doesn't realize that the battery cover doesn't appear to be level after fully screwing it down. The muzzle side of the lid is flush while the stock side of the lid isn't; ...

Re: Replacing battery on FFIII @#$%
Earlier version required removal of sight to change battery. FFIII remains in place and battery is removed from the top of the unit, not the bottom as in previous versions. Why Duracell? Longer shelf life--10 years (claimed). I bought a cheap pack off Amazon and carried a spare in my pack. Billy's b...

Replacing battery on FFIII @#$%
Here's the easy way to do it. Use the widest flat tipped screwdriver that will fit into the slot. Problem with smaller blades is that the lid tips in the slot's direction, side to side, preventing thread full engagement. Don't even think of using the screwdriver that comes with the red dot. Use it f...

If you had posted on the handloading forum you might have seen how to make one out of a dowel and exacto blade. Lots of good info there. The link is a "sticky".

Rem. 870 Express 12 ga. Super Mag
I'm giving to the son of family friends my Super Mag. He's taken an interest in turkey hunting. My generosity doesn't extent to loading TSS for him. ;) What readily available choke (don't even suggest the most expensive ones) would one suggest to shoot, gag, Win. Longbeards?? Yes, it's brass. In that particular gun, brass works better than plastic. Others have found the reverse to be true in their guns. Gil

River Bird
Last Sunday I went to a bird which was the nearest of three I heard at first light, and I estimated 400 yards to him in the tree. At 200 yards, I ran into water. River was into the woods and he was closer to the other side than to my side. I backed out and looked for one of the other birds. All stop...

Re: What is considered a good pattern density?
Minimum of 100 pellets in 10" circle at 40 and 60 yards. Assuming sufficient velocity, the 70% rule would require 200 at 40, 140 at 50 and 98 at 60. Of course one would have more than 200 at 40 with the "Y?" load. At 60 yards with a perfectly centered head/neck shot expect shot in the...

Re: What wood for box call for SE
When you make of list of callmakers that Neil Cost had a direct influence, you need to include Albert Paul. Albert Paul's box calls are as fine as any box call you will ever take into the turkey woods. I had a nice Paul "Henry Davis" holly short box, smaller than a standard Cost or Lamar ...

Re: What wood for box call for SE
Neil Cost would often cut red cedar from standing dead trees on a friend's property near Edgefield, SC. I have a box made by Lamar Williams 20 years ago made from poplar with a walnut lid. Cost mentored him in addition to several other call makers here in the SE. My earliest Cost call is all cedar c...

Neil Cost used several different woods: Cedar, poplar, butternut. He often used a walnut striker for these woods, but also the same wood the box was made. He also used cypress, but not as much as he used poplar. Gil

I loaded up 3 for tomorrow checking zero and first day in the woods. Note the crimper. It is clamped to the end of a board. With my knee pressed against the board pushing it into the coffee table, with my left hand clamping the board and the rto's lever to raise the shell against the crimper, I hand...
