Re: Gobblers on the limb

I always call to a roosted bird. I want him thinking about me before he flies down. If he's got hens around, I call as much or more than they do, to compete for his attention. I've never noticed calling causing a bird to stay in the tree longer, but I don't know how others call, so it's hard to say ...

Re: FALL TURKEY SEASONS FOR ALL 49 STATES....

Another issue I have with a fall season is the fact that a lot of the birds killed are 2 to 4 months old. Just does't sound like something I'd be interested in seeing happen around here. Lovett Williams used to talk about this. He was a proponent of shooting jakes during the fall/winter - because t...

Re: Need advice on mylar.

I have loaded some one ounce 20 gauge loads for kids using Kyle's old load that has an entire 28 gauge wad inside the CSD 20 gauge wad. It uses no buffer or cushion, but still claims to be under max pressure. I guess there are a lot of ways to load TSS. It's a great way to load TSS, but it's limite...

Re: Blowing up a shotgun? This is a good read.

SAAMI specs leave a lot of leeway to keep things safe. But everybody has too keep in mind that hard shot doesn't have much give and use recipes and chokes that take that into consideration. I've always told folks that if you have a gun or choke that you couldn't bear to see a scratch in, don't shoot...

Re: Looking for a 1/2 oz. or less subgauge waterfowl recipe

I want to shoot ducks and geese with TSS this winter but don't see the need for the large shot charges we're all shooting at turkeys. I've got 28 gauge recipes calling for 9/16, 13/16 and 7/8 oz. but nothing lighter, and the only ,410 recipe I have calls for 13/16. Idealy, I'd like a 3/8 load for ....

Re: 8 days

Great pictures and story,...but I am a bit confused. The last pictures appear to be either Rios or Merriams, but I see no reference to any hunts other than in Eastern habitats. I know in the past you have mentioned hunting Utah, was there a change of venue not mentioned? If not, those are the oddes...

Re: 8 days

Day 7 Went back to GA and hunted one of the prettiest properties around. Had a lot of fun, but they were tight-lipped and unresponsive to my overtures. Day 8 My brother, youngest daughter, and I arrived at the place we planned on hunting just as gobbling was getting underway. We could not set up whe...

8 days

Only got to tote the gun 8 days this spring, but had an enjoyable season nonetheless. Day 1 Went down to GA for opening day, and hunted hard all day long. Heard one gobbler off the property on the roost, and I couldn't get close enough to do any good with him. Never saw a track or any sign anywhere....

Re: 1 oz 20 gauge tss load

Any one have any super fast load data for the 20 or 12? I've got a nice 1624 fps 20 ga load, and a buddy (he doesn't post here) came up with a 1680 fps 12 ga load. He kills a lot of ducks with that. Hal, what size payloads are those running? Light - 3/4 oz for the 12 and 9/16 for the 20. Also have ...

Re: Need advice on mylar.

I've always been afraid to not use it if the recipe calls for it. But be careful if shooting it over a chrony. I found out the hard way that a piece of mylar will kill a chrony dead. For a 12 gauge I like the idea of the petals of a CSD20 wad instead of mylar. It provides absolute barrel protection...

Re: TSS 2's and deer

I like the idea of a 1oz load of 2s at standard velocity. Wonder how far that'd perforate the neck of a doe. Back about 9 or 10 years ago with the first "buckshot" TSS load I came up with, I used #1s, going about 1235 fps MV. The first deer shot was a small buck broadside at 67 yds. The shooter cou...

Re: T10s?

I've been using tss for 9 seasons now. I really hesitated to use 8s that first year; just couldn't believe shot that small could be effective... Fond memories! Re: T10s?

Reports have been very good on the 10s this spring. I suspect they will be a very popular size for the small bores. Had one report out of a 20 ga that is crazy, but have no reason to believe he's lying. They did very well last fall for me on wood ducks and crows.... When I first started shooting and...
