Re: Thanks for nothing
Not affecting mine. Some National Parks are slated to be closed but National Forests shouldn't be. But as a former employee of the USFS, it wouldn't surprise me if certain districts close due to "Covid-Laziness"

Lend Between the Lakes Hunter Use Permit
Please be aware that the LBL Hunter use permit WITH BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING IS SET TO INCREASE FROM $35 TO $75. IT IS NOTED IN THE KY Spring Hunting Guide. Here is the email from Jeff Land@ LBL with the statement " the hunt permit is $25 and that cost is not changing". Keep this statement in m...

Re: Merriams vs easterns?
The mountain birds that I've hunted sounded farther away than they really were. Be aware of that. My first couple of hunts I bumped birds because of that.

Re: Gobbler calls
I've gobbled on a tube call, by voice, and on a box call. If I use it it's either early season or later in the day. I will combine gobbler yelps with the gobble. I don't use it on morning hunts if I'm hunting Public Land...... Although I have used it to call my buddies out off the woods..... Works l...

Re: Tell me about your pants.
I wear whatever. I have Cabela's Microtex, some quick dry Mossy Oak, some predator polyester, I normally wear something pretty light because I tend to overheat. I like the Microtex because it's doable but not real heavy and it pulls the sweat away from you.

TC used to make the New Englander that was-is cap lock. Pedersoli still does make a cap lock I think. There is a CVA KIT Double on gunbroker right now that I thought was caplock but did'nt look that close at. Several Pedersoli's. Re: Muzzleloading for turkeys
I have 4 Muzzleloader shotguns, plus a 20ga I built for my youngest son. Mine are TK-2000, CVA SxS, Pedersoli SxS, & 12 ga Custom flintlock. They are really all that I turkey hunt with except for a couple of military bases where BP isn't allowed. I just posted a thread in the Bigbore section on ...

Let's see those Smokepoles and the turkeys they've hammered. I've got several 12ga Muzzleloaders TK-2000, CVA-SxS, Pedersoli-SxS, and custom 12ga Flintlock. Here's a couple of Flintlock gobblers

It depends. Are you wanting to do the same in the same season or break it up? Also where are you from? Part sleep is as much logistics as hunting, especially if you plan on doing same season.

Re: Texas self-guided/trespass fee hunts?
There are plenty of places in Turkey Country magazine, but there are several large WMAs that are open to hunt. If you're dead set on Texas get in the TPW website and look around. If you are just wanting to hunt Rios, the 3 states North of Texas have better public Land opportunities.

Re: Patience kills turkeys
If you want to try an experiment on patience. Go to a place that if fairly open and has a Gobbling turkey close and call aggressively for a couple of minutes then shut up and as you leave place a trail camera to cover the area that you called from. Go back to the same place the following morning and...

Re: Cracking the code to a strut zone gobbler?
I like to hunt strut zone birds, I find them some of the easiest birds to kill. The key is to PLAN on a 3 day hunt. Plan on scouting, you have to Know EXACTLY where the strut zones are. I've found that these birds are older birds that know that hens are suppose to go to them. The first day you try t...

I have OnX and like it but I also like Basecamp which is alot cheaper, for those that can't afford OnX. It seems as most of the features are gathered from the same sources. Another cost conscious app for those hunting Public Lands is US Topo Maps, with the FS maps layer turned on. Even with OnX and ...

Re: Have you used an Eastern hen decoy for Merriams or Rio?
Won't matter. I made my first decoys out of plywood and rebar, and painted gallon bleach jugs, Back in the 80s and the Rios and Merriams fell in love with them. Lol. Since then I've used production decoys and the colors haven't mattered anywhere

Re: 2020 Merriam hunt
All of my Merriam's hunts have been in Lincoln National Forest and the biggest factor for there and most of New Mexico has to do with water availability and snow levels. If snow was deep they move away from it. Water they will be close to. There less water, the more concentrated. Especially if you h...

Florida had 40+ WMAs that you don't need to apply for. I think that some are bow only and some have daily quotas but I've never had trouble getting in to gun or mzldr hunt, so you shouldn't have a problem finding public Land with bow. Here's my experience with Osceolas and it might just be my experi...

I dug into the regulations, though not as deep as you. But you don’t have to go far to realize this wasn’t done on the up-and-up. And I don’t know a single turkey hunter who would prefer 30% fewer hunting days a single opening weekend free-for-all over three well-structured quota hunts (including t...

Well...I live in the heart of DBNF and Big South Fork and 3 miles from Tennessee and hunt both states. If I was a non resident of both states my pick would definitely be Tennessee, 4 turkeys, longer season, Great WMA' s, plus the deer seasons are longer and you can kill more bucks than in Kentucky, ...
