Re: She's growing up to fast !
Steve, thanks, but I think others make rivercane calls that look as good as they sound and vice versa. Mark Sharpe is one and guesswho is another. The only thing I have over them is age. Gil

There are lots of fine call makers. It's individual's preference that fits a person's style.

Re: How early to start owl hooting?
Pete, I usually like to hear a distant gobble before owling, or if I hear owls or song birds first. Sometimes I've shock gobbled a bird in the dark, just before first light, but that can be overdone. Once the crows start up, time to move on. Owling can be overdone. What works preseason might not wor...

Re: Burris Fastfire 3
Very happy with the Fastfire 3's put one on my gun as well. both with the 3 mil dot. The battery went in fine on my daughters but was a PITA to get the cover screwed on on mine. Game changer though once sighted in which went very well on both. Next time, make sure your screwdriver blade is wider tha...

First Luna, now Mickey. Another terrible loss. Fortunately the joy of the past with them eventually overshadows the pain and sorrow of their loss. Sorry to hear of this. As Will Rogers one remarked if there are no dogs in heaven I want to go where they are. The price we pay for their unflinching loy...

Re: Turkey Hunting Public Land
I have seen a serious decline in turkey hunting manners since I began in 1977 when the first season in this part of Georgia was re-instituted after over two decades of closed seasons. In the beginning, I hunted a large tract of public land and there were few reports of crowding hunters. A wide berth...

Re: Please meet Sadie !
Congratulations, and I hope the puppy months race on by. Luna was a tough loss. During bird season I had my big Brittanys on Seresto collars, but take them off while hunting. Best tick preventative I've used so far. Allegedly water doesn't affect them, but a constant dose of water retrieves might be...

My uncle who was 85 when he died this past fall was a major league pitcher and had been instructed by Lucky McDaniel as part of Spring Training for hand-to-eye coordination for batting and throwing while playing baseball. My uncle always had a sightless BB gun on hand and up until his death could h...

Re: 410 vs 20ga youth starter gun
4 years ago I had customized a Yildiz single-shot .410 with red dot for a late buddy. The gun weighed 3.25 lbs. and I loaded some 13/16 oz. sub sonic loads of #9 for him. His son called me this week to tell me he cut 2" off the stock and took his two sons, 6 and 11, for the youth opener. His 6 ...

Excellent video of the "One Shot Zero" technique. I prefer setting up for 40 rather than 30, but their point is made. Dave Owen has a video but this one is better because Dave takes the gun off the stand to make "click" adjustments. Gil

Use a compass to course the bird, especially in the dark. If he shuts up, you still know the direction. Side stepping thickets, water, etc. can get you off direction, but the compass will show the way. Gil

I spray clothes with Sawyers' once a season for turkeys and once during quail and woodcock season. There's some bad stuff in some tick bites. I know a woman who was in intensive care due to a bite. B-I-L has Lyme's disease contracted from a tick while working on a Georgia barrier island. Gil

Re: It's just not fair
Years ago I was invited by a friend to hunt an area I'd never been before on private land. Sure enough, I heard the gobble and he answered. I then heard a grinding, rattling mechanical noise behind me at about 100 years. I was between the noise and the gobbler. Shortly after the grinding stopped, th...

Re: TSS in older guns?
While a Stevens may be a family heirloom with sentimental value, unless it is in fine close to unused condition, its value to a collector would not be in the same range as a Parker or LC Smith in American made vintage doubles. If it is old, the wood be more fragile than newer wood and while I wouldn...
