Re: Roll crimp Vs. Fold/star crimp? TSS

Well, this season I won't roll or press handloads. It'll be all brass in .410 and 20. I started out with a press, but it was a pia to set up for different hull lengths. Roll crimping was far easier to get right with less effort, and using a hand cranked vintage crimper yielded better results than wh...

Re: Ben Rodgers Lee (Ricky jo Bishops post)

There was some type of NWTF event in Louisville, Georgia in 1976 and present were some rock stars of turkey hunting from the early days. I had never hunted turkeys before and wanted to learn how to call. Preston Pittman, Dick Kirby, Neil Cost and of course, Ben Lee. I met and talked with all of them...

No, especially if you are sitting on a 100 unfired 3" hulls and you have a good recipe for them that you've used. Gil

Re: A Transition to Handloading and Costs

Your costs of set up were reasonable but you could have done without the trickler and shot dipper. A kitchen tablespoon works just fine and you can creep up on the weights easily. The funnel is a good idea. Plastic works, but in your dry climate with static electricity, the powders stick to it. Meta...

Re: The outlawing of male turkey decoys

I have not been to Nashville for the show in 6 years, but went this week because I had to pick up a mount from Cally. If you were there, the white headed Gould's strutting for the bearded hen was my piece. Cally is amazing, but that is another thread. I was utterly disgusted at the number of reapin...

Re: The outlawing of male turkey decoys

I haven't relied on a decoy in decades. As much as I don't like their usage, they seem to be the entry tools of new and young hunters into the sport. New blood into the sport gives a voice to those who will stand up against the anti-hunting segment of our society. While I would hope that the new blo...

Re: The outlawing of male turkey decoys

The convention was full of gun mount reaper fans. Some of them you could control the fan by squeezing a grip that made fan go up and down. Who is going to be the first to paint their face in a tailfeather pattern with a surrounding corona of tailfeathers sorta like Little Miss/Master Sunflower? Tha...

Re: Yildiz .410 pattern

Clay, didn't you have your Yildiz dipped? One of the features of these guns that I like, other than great looking walnut, is the corrosion resistant finish. Satin chrome on the barrel's outside and anodized alloy on the action. Your Bobwhite's barrel has a chrome finish as well. Gil

Please show us the whole stock. Wood looks well-figured. Nice pattern, too. NIce job on the sling. What pattern did you use making it? Gil

Re: Anyone ever experimented with leaving the csd100 wad unslit?

In reloading the 10 ga. years ago, we tried a split that divided the cup into two petals. Most of the time, it would flip and punch a hole through the patterning board as it became a lead weighted badminton shuttlecock as the payload stayed in the wad and led with the gas seal. Stick with four petal...

Not to rain on the parade, but I see from this link where Jesse Martin won and Dave was 1st runner-up which is pretty damn good. Was this report accurate? Gil

Re: Shotgun sights

If you go with the FFIII, there is no better or more practical mount than the one made by Sumtoy. It is a low mount contoured to fit the shape of the receiver and has the 4 short corner posts tailor made to accept the FFIII, etc. Someone who has the Vortex can tell you if it is interchangeable on th...

The time and effort of removing the FFII to install new batteries and then re-zeroing makes the III more desirable despite more costs.

Re: Shotgun sights

Glad someone pointed out the need for clean trigger break. Reasonably safe amount of pull, but glass-like break with no creep, will help avoid misses.

Re: Shotgun sights

The OP mentioned not "getting down on the gun" to line up the sights. A feature of the red dots, those that are parallax free, and most are, is the dot doesn't have to be centered in the optic. It can appear anywhere in the "window" and as long as it is on what you want to hit, it will do so regardl...

Re: Shotgun sights

Presbyopia is a natural occurrence of aging when the eye won't clearly focus on near objects. It starts at about 40. Don't spend another season without a red dot. Your inclination towards either Vortex or FF is good. The lead flies where the dot lies or in your case, TSS. I started out failing to se...

Re: Federal TSS - Just thinking outloud...

The big ammo companies have proprietary powders made for them that may be similar to what we handloaders use, but I doubt if anyone can say exactly what the equivalent over the counter powder would be in their loads. They are pretty much unrecognizable and maybe so on purpose. Gil

Re: Remington declaring bankruptcy?

I bought an 870 SuperMag (Express) NIB from Bass Pro and the gun wouldn't cycle Remington Game Loads, but would cycle Winchester Promos. Go figure; the perfect storm of cheap shells and crappy gun made by the same company. Gil
