Re: Which Choke?

I run a Rem SF HS .675 in my 1187. It throws great patterns with 2 oz handloads of 8s (260/188) and 9x8s (306/248). Wouldn't want it any tighter. I have an IC .665 for that gun but have never even shot it with TSS, I am so pleased with the Rem choke.

There's 8 less raccoons on my property than there were a couple of months ago. Don't know what happened to them. :angel4:

Re: Apex vs Federal TSS

Agreed. Have shot neither since I handload, but from everything I have read, Apex should do better with that choke. Most folks report they need to choke the crap out of the Feds to get acceptable patterns due to that infernal FCW.

Not quite the midwest, but the turkey population appears to be way down in the areas I hunt in W. Ky.

Re: why 9 over 8 tss?

I have found the same to be true of duplex loads, but IMO are not worth the trouble unless you need to get rid of some bigger shot (8.5s in my case). If you use a shot trap, it is a real PIA to separate the sizes of duplex loads. So I keep all that reclaimed mixed shot in a separate bottle to load ...

Re: Never walk to a dead gobbler without your gun

Happened to me this year in Ky. Was hunting right on the edge of a cut cornfield. Shot a bird that got suspicious and started fast walking at 45 yds with a 1.625 oz load of TSS 8.5s over 9s. Bird was coming on a string and set to pass by me at 25 yds when he saw something he didn't like (late aftern...

Re: why 9 over 8 tss?

No need to shoot anything bigger than 9s in TSS unless req'd by law. Currently loading 1&5/8 oz 8.5s over 9s in my 12 ga til I use up all the 8.5s ( bought the 8.5s advertised as 9s, but they were oversize). Then I don't plan to load anything but 9s; 345/10 will get it done as far as I need it to.

I develop all my loads using it. Just remember to try not to breathe it in if you can help it. Thread on here a while back about how bad it is for your lungs. I don't go so far as to wear a mask (though not a bad idea), but I also try not to inhale when I open or close the zip-loc bag I store the mi...

Re: TSS #11

10s @ 1100 good to 54; 11s good to 35. I would not go smaller than 10s personally, although as others have said, they should be ok in the open barrel of a double. I'm with PCP on differentiating the shells. The two shells I use in my 0/U look very different - open barrel is a clear Fio, rolled and t...

Re: .410 Bore Booger Source

I get it out of 12 gauges too. I never use solvent on my boresnake. I use it to pull out the majority of the plastic and powder residue. Then use a nylon bristle brush with solvent(Shooter's Choice) to get it really clean.

Re: Done in Kentucky

Just got back from a four day hunt in W. Ky (Crittenden Co). Terrible weather with 35 mph winds, hot one day and cold the next, then rain. Pretty tough sledding. Was lucky to kill one monster (24 lbs). Heard very few gobbles and saw no strutters in fields while driving. Been hunting out there for 5 ...

A 1200fps MV #6 single lead pellet probably runs out of acceptable gel penetration of 1.25" at 40-42 yards. But multiple hits (a dozen or more) should kill to 50.
Nope, 50 yds.

Re: Blended load????

I shoot a 50/50 layered load of 9s and 8s in a 2 oz 12 ga load, 50/50 layered load of 1.625 oz 9s and 8.5s in another. Never used 7.5s; just too big and take up too much space IMO. But if I were going to use them, I would layer them with the 7.5s on top, and tinker with the percentages until you get...

Re: #6 Lead Maximum Effective Range

I agree also on lead 7.5s for the .410, but I don't see where the OP mentioned that gauge. Anyway, KPY shows lead 6s @1150 to have 1.25" of penetration in BG to 50 yds, which is about what experience shows with regards to killing range. An older study by Tom Roster suggested a max range of 35 yds, ...

Re: Favorite 12 gauge load

I get between high 300's and low 400's with Hal's 2.25 load depending on which choke I use. It is a smoker. I got 370/320 pattern with Barry's 2.25 ounce load. I have only shot it with a .680 in Browning Gold. You can't find a more simple recipe to load. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180410/9e...
