Re: Decline in bird population
We have problems with raccoons and coyote in the areas that we hunt. Our deer and turkey populations dropped drastically. We dont have time to check traps every day so trapping was out. We asked locals with chickens what they do to protect their birds. For raccoons they add crushed peppermint leave...

Re: Two Down Eight To Go!
Yea nothing like carrying all that back, blind, chairs, decoys setting up the blind, cutting brush, driving to check another spot, going back, break down the blind, carrying all the stuff out, driving back to the second spot, carrying it all back and setting it up again. Well worth it! Lol!

Re: Two Down Eight To Go!
The coat is something that I keep in my truck in the winter in case I break down. I hunt an hour+ from home close to my hunting buddies house. I drove up to setup the blind Sunday and was planning on going home. I brought everything but my clothes because I was going home. We setup the blind but the...

Re: Predator help...
I agree with plottdog. Felines cover kills with leaves and eat the head. Foxs usually take the kill back to the den. One study of about 200 turkey nests showed that about 50% of nests fall to predation mostly by raccoons who eat the eggs. Skunks, foxs, felines, opposums, snakes, coyote also raid nes...

Re: Henned up theory busted
Im curious about what preceeded the decline of the flocks in areas where there was a decline. Here there was a flock decline after deer died from blue tongue and chronic wasting disease. The deer carcas predation caused an increase in predators such as coyote, raccoons and fox's. The excessive numbe...

Re: Sense of Smell
LeadSlinger being that I've been known to do some things that others think are crazy I've had an awful lot of criticism thrown my way. Im really the last to criticize. I'm actually afraid to post what I do for the turkeys! LOL! I'll give an example! When deer hunting I have pockets full of acorns. I...

Re: Sense of Smell
Leadslinger... LOL! If we don't have a strong odor they can't smell us. It is better if we cover our scent while hunting turkey as I've had turkey spook when deer smelled me and spooked.

Turkeys can smell but they can't smell us. That is unless we smell like feces.

I know they can smell. I know they can smell and react to predator feces. I know they can smell cattle feces.
The question that I asked was can they smell food. Meaning Berries and other fruits, nuts ect.

Re: Handheld GPS
I use an android app called Handy GPS. They also have iphone and a windows app. The app is extremely easy to use and has more features than I will ever use. It easily does everything that I need and want it to do. They have a free version with limited waypoints and a pay version with unlimited waypo...

Re: Sense of Smell
Thanks for the welcome leadslinger! I was thinking the same thing. The next time that I visit my son I'll surely stop and ask all of the questions that I should have asked when I was there. I should mention that I had the strawberries. Dried strawberries. I eat them like candy! They don't have a str...

Re: Sense of Smell
Hunter GKS Thanks for the Welcome! I've read that quote many times in numerous articles. I know they can't smell us but apparently they can smell food or at least some foods. I don't know if the blind turkey developed the ability due to being blind or if all turkeys can smell foods? Or if they can s...
