Re: 3 Limbhanger Brothers

If they didn't die of old age, or something else killed them, I'd think they would be around this spring. We've had a decent winter up til the last storm too. Nothing like three plus feet of fluffy snow. It's settled some here, so they should be able to get around on top of it now, at least. Good lu...

Sweet!! Congrats to you both. Now that young man has the makings of a turkey hunter. He got out and killed a beautiful bird even with the flu, and the flu sucks. Congrats on a nice bird and I hope the boys both feel better soon. :struttin:

Beautiful bird shot with a beautiful gun, congrats!!

I thought spring was all but here until the last storm dumped somewhere between three and four feet of snow on us. I should have known better, but you can't blame a guy for hoping. Congrats again. :struttin:

Re: GN Kill thread

Only 1 3/8's? You should to be ashamed of yourself for shooting a bird with spurs that short. I'm only about 35 miles north of Norwich and I've got a buddy that has a camp south of there, in Bainbridge. The snow is all my fault. We've had some unseasonably warm weather here lately and I've...

Sorry about that. I get all fired up every time I look at the hooks on that bird of yours. :struttin:

If it keeps snowing I may need my snowshoes when season opens here. We must have at least three feet out there now and It's still coming down. Nice breeze too.

Re: Gone, But Not Forgotten...

I'm definitely going to contact the new owner and I'm hoping to get one more spring there. I talked to a guy that lives just down the road from me this this afternoon. He asked permission to hunt deer on the property this coming fall and was shot down. We'll see. Worst case scenario, I had a lot of ...

Gone, But Not Forgotten...

I just learned that one of my favorite hunting spots has been sold. To a real estate developer, no less. I've hunted this farm since the early eighties and I feel like I've lost an old friend. I don't know the actual acreage, but It's a big chunk of prime turkey hunting and it borders me. I knew it ...

I've always carried a compass, especially in areas that I'm not familiar with. They're cheap insurance and you don't have to worry about the battery dying on you.

The rubber "grip dot" gloves (cloth with the rubber dots on the palm, thumb and fingers) work pretty well and they even make them in camo.

I'm don't mean to be argumentative with anybody, we all have our own ideas based on our own experiences and we all love to hunt turkeys. That's the bottom line IMHO.

Re: Sense of Smell

Turkinator posted as I was typing. Ok, they're dumb birds, but if they weren't capable of, I won't say learning, I'll say conditioning, I think they would have all been killed off a long time ago. If you call a bird in and spook it repeatedly, at some point it stops coming to a call. Or it comes int...

What I don't understand is if turkeys can smell as well as some people think, how has it not registered to them in all the years that man has hunted them, that our scent represents danger?

Re: Sense of Smell

Welcome!!

I have to wonder if the turkey wasn't following the sound of the guy holding the strawberry. I've never seen anything to lead me to believe turkeys have much, if any, sense of smell. Thank God.
