Re: Getting ocellated turkey skins out of Mexico

I think the new MX government has pretty much made it impossible for an individual to bring back his own trophies into the U.S. That's what Manuel told me anyway, and why would he lie? Judging from my own near-50 years of experience in dealing with Mexican "authorities", everyone down ther...

28 gauge o/u

Looking for recommendations on a light-frame 28 gauge o/u for my wife. She's currently shooting a Tristar, but the trigger pull tightened up on it and despite sending it back to the factory, it still has a 7-pound pull. Tristar says that's within factory specs, but that's a little heavy for a turkey...

Getting ocellated turkey skins out of Mexico

Last March, my wife and I hunted with Manuel Enriques in Campeche for ocellated turkeys and killed three nice toms. More than half a year later, we are STILL waiting for our turkey skins to be delivered to our Arkansas designated taxidermist. Patty Garcia, Manuel's secretary in El Paso, says the Mex...

I'm having a problem sending PMs

I've got five PMs to various folks stuck in my Outbox, one of them dating back to November. Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Re: Daddy-Daughter Duck Hunt

Priceless. Reminds me of my daughter's first squirrel hunt 35 years ago, except that instead of a mallard whistle, Leslie was squeaking a squirrel call and shaking bushes for all she was worth. She enjoyed it so much I had a hard time getting her to be quiet long enough to hear a squirrel barking.

Re: Tom Kelly needs a hunting partner in Maryland

Jill and I got the chance to hunt L.A. (Lower Alabama) with the Colonel in early April 2002. I'd already been invited by Michael Waddell to hunt a prime west Texas ranch during that same time frame. I begged off the Texas hunt without a second thought. Michael, my apologies if you see this. It was h...

Tom Kelly needs a hunting partner in Maryland

I was corresponding with Tom's business partner David Clarke this morning. He said the Colonel, now 93, is slowing down but is still alert and energetic. David said Tom "still sounds like he could go spring turkey hunting if somebody in Maryland would pick him up and take him to the woods."...

Re: Jim Spencer's Bad Birds 2

Another update on my new book: After a horrible experience with the USPS where they lost almost 300 mailed books for nearly two months (they were hiding in a Memphis USPS processing facility,) sales of Bad Birds 2 have been pretty good and delivery has been prompt. But there's still some headspace l...

Yoo hoo, anybody out there? Christmas is getting closer every day. Bad Birds 2, the new book, is $22 plus $5 s&h whether by check or PayPal. Unlimited additional copies are $18 each with no additional postage. My other two turkey books (Turkey Hunting Digest and the original Bad Birds) are $12 e...

Hey, all you turkey book readers: Bad Birds 2 is now available, and I don't see a lot of your names on my recent mailing list. They're here, waiting to be shipped to you. Send me an email (no PMs please, I don't get on here often enough.) modernmountainman@gmail.com. Thanks, y'all. Papa needs a new ...

Re: Jim Spencer's Bad Birds 2

UPDATE, Y'ALL. Bad Birds 2 has been delayed at the printer due to (what else) the Chinavirus. They tell me now I ought to have books in hand by Oct. 15 or so. Apologies to those who have pre-ordered. FOR ALL THE REST OF YOU...I'll keep the $20 price alive for all orders received before October 1, bu...

Re: Texas

Snake boots are for wussies. I've hunted Texas dozens of times and only been hit by one measly rattlesnake. ;0 But do bring the thinnest, coolest camo you can find. And Gil is spot on with the recommendation for a non-inflatable cushion. Get a closed foam pad instead.

Re: Jim Spencer's Bad Birds 2

Thanks to all who have pre-ordered Bad Birds 2. Because of the big response, I'm extending the price reduction deadline until September 1. Go to the post I made in the classifieds for ordering info, and remember to order by the end of the month. I think we'll be getting books by mid-September. If yo...

Re: Jim Spencer's Bad Birds 2

I'll take it under advisement, Crow. No fooling, I'm a pretty smart guy but I damn sure don't sound like it. I make Tom Kelly sound like William F. Buckley. Don't hold your breath, though. I'm going to be out about 9 grand by the time BB2 is finished, and so far I've taken in about $500. Right now, ...

Re: Jim Spencer's Bad Birds 2

Maybe spice it up a bit to get the comments started, something like---- would a strutter robot decoy still function and be able drive thru a chufa patch if it got shot with a load of TSS? I'll be placing an order and looking forward to reading your new book. I would also get it on audio CD's if you...

Re: Turkey and Turkey Hunting Magazine

Yep, this year it's a one and done. They had planned to put out 3 or maybe 4 issues and I had assignments for 3 of them. The stuffed shirts in the ivory tower evidently don't attach much importance to turkey hunting or turkey hunters. Idiots abound, it seems. Thanks for the nice words regarding Bad ...
