Re: Cracking the code to a strut zone gobbler?

I will use what's there and may bring a short stake blind if the low growing cover doesn't green up soon enough. I've had some great hunts by using downed trees for cover and I really like not having a ceiling over my head. I'm actually pretty happy that tree came down, because it may have helped so...

Re: Cracking the code to a strut zone gobbler?

I hadn't been to the farm for over a month, so yesterday I checked on things. I found since we've had so much rain over the winter that the stump hole I was working on looks more like a half-full 100 gallon stock tank and probably can't be hunted from. The swamp is way up in the woods and a few sect...

Re: Permethrin

I use Duration permethrin concentrate that I get from Travelers Supply. Its a bit more expensive up front, but it makes more batches and costs less than Sawyers in the long run. I use it on my hunting clothes and on the clothes I wear to travel to the tropics. Since I started using Duration and DEET...

Re: Fresh pineapple

This has nothing to do with pineapple, but it kinda fits the thread. A guy I used to work with had an unusually excessive hatred for Christmas. That guy could give probably Scrooge lessons. One day when we were riding to a job together I asked him what the deal was. Here's his story: Jason grew up i...

Pineapples are your friend. I love mine cut lengthwise in spears and grilled along with teriyaki turkey.

Chest waders and farts do not go together well at all.

Jim I think your up around Raleigh. I'm in clinton. Sampson county.
I'm outside of Hillsborough near the Durham & Orange County line. I'm probably about as close to Raleigh as I want to get, except during Hurricanes hockey games.

I just got home from buying lottery tickets...

I got drawn to hunt some public land that I've been trying to get chosen to hunt for 8 years AND I got excused from jury duty tomorrow because they already met quota. I also got permission to hunt my old lease, because the guys who lease it don't care about turkey hunting. WOOO-WOOO-WOOO!!!

Re: Pruning Shears

Really depends, I got a pair of ez cut rachet for free as they were next booth over. They were awesome for 10 years than I broke the blade, at the time they had a lifetime warranty, but getting for free no way would send them back. I bought a fiskars loppers. They work well on small stuff. I don't ...

My best friend just gave me a brand new pair of Steiner 10x32 XC binoculars. I really like the fit, feel, & size of them. I can't wait until daylight to see how well they perform. He also bought a pair of the same model in 8X32 for himself. He said Steiner discontinued that XC model and he got a goo...

Florian RP 701 pruning shears work well. They'll cut something about the diameter of my thumb. They're small enough to go in a vest pocket and are light weight.

Peepers singing and daffodils flowering here. Thankful it hasn't been cold enough to snow, or we'd have a pile of it from all the rain we had this week. The river is muddy enough to plow. Every day is getting closer to turkey season.

I got my Granddad's 16ga. Ranger pump, but he cut the stock down to fit him (he was 5'2") and I'm not going to change it. It was the first shotgun I ever shot when I was a kid.

I wish you good luck with your 16. I suspect the TSS payload ought to thump a gobbler. Take no prisoners.

I've got a pair of Leupold Gold Ring 10x28 compact binoculars that I've used for around 25 years. They're lightweight, clear, and small enough to fit in a vest pocket. They have a lifetime warranty too, though I've not needed it so far. They have definitely helped me hunt more successfully.

I had some EZ Kut that a buddy "borrowed". They'll probably never see the inside of my vest again.

Re: Spooking turkeys

Right before the season, I'll go call to turkeys at the state park that don't get hunted (or aren't supposed to be) just to work on calling to live birds. I usually get courtesy gobbles back, but talking with live birds helps get my rhythm down. On weekday mornings before work, I'll go listen from a...

Re: Learned Or Habitat?

Habitat for sure. When one gobbler gets taken out, the next guy in line takes the spot over. Just like a quality stump on ideal structure, when the big bass is gone, the next most dominant one takes it over. There's a bench below the ridge on a powerline cut at my old lease that we probably took 26 ...

Never hurts to ask

Just like about everyone else on here, I'm always looking new places to turkey hunt. A couple of days ago at a job by the river, I mentioned to the real estate agent who hired me, that the property we were on looked like it should have a lot of deer & turkey traffic. He let me know that 7 deer were ...

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not certain he'll even use the same area this year, but I want to be prepared if he does. I would definitely rather call him to me once he gets on the ground on his way there. I wish I could get close to his roost, but he tends to roost a long way from where I've dea...
